Now, if Sumlin doesn't hire a good DC, and he doesn't start winning 10+ games w/o JFF, then that will open the door to UTx, but the fundamental dynamic has changed.

I agree with that I promise you. No one beat the A&M to SEC drum louder than me, I still have the .com to prove it.

I just can't stand to see someone say "we don't need that kid, we just need to win" when it is obvious we need the kid TO win.

Winning solves everything is about as helpful as saying death cures cancer.

I absolutely agree that losing Mack would hurt. He definitely gives us a better chance to win, and win big.

But even a "difference maker" doesn't always make the difference. We had Myles Garrett set the SEC freshman sack record, and we STILL had a terrible defense. But even with Mack gone, we're going to have the talent on campus to field a decent-to-good defense. Good enough to win enough to solidify ourselves in the short term as the #1 destination for recruits in Texas.

Is Sumlin for certain the guy? That's looking questionable right now, but that doesn't obscure the fact that things aren't the same as they were when we were still under Bevo's thumb.

You are correct. That and the Big 12 GOR are the big Aggie silver lining for at least a decade.

It would be nice to have more than that though.

Garrett and Speedy are difference makers that would never even consider A&M in the past. Mack and Jefferson are those same type of guys. Yeah, we would get a Martellus Bennett or Cristine Michael type talent. Even a Jake Matthews or Luke Joeckel. Those guys were completely meaningless though. If they aren't on defense, and there aren't multiple of them on defense then none of this matters. You can't win the SEC without defense and you can't win it without guys like Mack and Jefferson.

The state of Texas only has a couple of these guys every year and if we aren't scooping them up, then there's never any playoff conversation. Let's just eat our orange slices and hand out Capri suns to the players after each game and have a good time at the whatevernon-playoff.com bowl every year
