It's fair to say we ha e a little uncertainty on that side of the ball as well.

I think our biggest issues last year were addressed.
1. Playcalling - Spav is still here, but he is a year more experienced and can rely on his OL/RB & QB more (see below)
2. OL coaching. We were and still have loads of talent. Dave should have our guys ready to kick arse and stop wasting our talent.
3. QB play. While Trill has his moments he clearly was not the right guy and could now complete a deep ball to save his life. Kyle did about as well as you'd expect a true fish to do. I have sky high expectations for him.
4. Drops. Our WR probably lead the NCAA in drops. I'm not sure what is being done to improve it. New coaching may help, but Beaty was a good coach. Better ball placement from the QB too (see no more Trill).

We can bitch about our O last year til the cows come home , but we finished 36th on Scoring O (32.1 ppg) and 33rd on Total O (440+) vs a very tough schedule. That should be good enough to win a lot of games with a half way decent D.

Spoiler Alert
Jamie gets killed on Dorne. Bronn too trying to save him. The White Walkers breach the wall. And then Rob Start is resurrected from the dead with wolf head and all.

7 on 7 wasn't very long yesterday.
Team meeting
Position coach meeting
then 7 on 7
Freshman had orientation but did participate in the 7 on 7

3 Interceptions last night with Kyler, Kyle and Connor each having one.

Two of the interceptions were good throws with better coverage and the other one was a bad throw.
Dunning with 2 picks Noel had a pick
Kirk, Sabo and Ratley making the most big plays.

In my mind, the biggest improvement on the offensive side of the ball is going to come from the Dave Christensen hire. Not Kyle having another year in the system, not any new player, not something from Spav.

#1, he's going to have our talented OL actually performing like it, instead of looking like unmotivated, discombobulated sacks of flesh as they did last year.
#2, you better believe he has a lot of input on play design and scheme. We'll have a much more well-constructed running game and make use of tight ends. When he was at Mizzou they had an offense that I lusted after: spread, but with teeth.

I went to Utah at Colorado last year and I really liked what I saw form his offense there as well.

gimmethescoop said... (original post)When it comes to a 7 on 7 setting, Dunning is without a doubt a 5* prospect. He could be stellar. We have to hope it translates on the field in pads. Everybody wants to see what he looks like in pads. With the exception of DMack his name is the one I hear the most on the freshman. Not including the EE.

tend to agree

Many probably don't realize the origins of the Air Raid but it came from the 80s BYU offense. Mumme/Leach substituted midget slot receivers for TEs because there were a ton of athletes no one recruited bc they were too small. It was brilliant as most defenses didn't have guys that could cover the Wes Welker's of the world

But we've evolved. Now guys like Quiv are highly recruited. And TEs are completely forgotten. Mizzou made a living off this. And there are a ton of bigger guys that no one recruits any more.

We can recruit who we want. So DC is bringing back the original TEs to the offense. And unlike Valdosta, UK, TTU or whomever, we can recruit elite ones. Against teams that try to play small against us (like LSU has), we can go heavy with TEs and against teams that are big (like Bama) we can go slots.

So if you had to compare the plan this year to another offense for a visual... 06-07 Mizzou?

So it pretty much makes sense that when we break SEC records offensively and Spav gets a shot as HC somewhere next year, Dave Christensen is our OC in waiting

It'll definitely have that flavor. But I think it's going to be it's own thing. Plus we don't have that personnel this year.

But while DC is an awesome hire, it's not entirely correct to credit him with offensive changes. We've been trying to go this direction since 2012 (after the LSU game in particular). We're not moving in this direction because DC was hired. We hired him because he's run some similar stuff to what Sumlin and Spav would like to do.

Also despite the silly message board memes, Jake is an incredibly sharp dude. Provided he and DC are on the same page, I think the offense will be impressive. We had a bit of a split in the offensive staff last year and it came to a head.

It's nice that we were able to send a position coach to be a head coach, AND upgrade our staff and improve the rapport with each other. Things don't always work that well.

I think Spav gets way too much criticism considering the issues he had to work around. Just like kliff gets too much credit for what he had to work with.

I'm excited for this year, but Tarp is preaching on #'s that were scaling back the offense big time and trying to conform to the rest of the conference. I'm all for an improved running game, but I feel like we have to stay true to the advantages Texas gives us.

We should have the best QB,WR's and DB's in the conference for the long term future.

totes his fault for Kenny Hill being incapable of throwing a pass past 10 yards w/any accuracy and the WRs epic case of the dropsies
