It’s brutal. But I think Sumlin lost his way while at A&M. He was a good coach when we hired him.

is it true that his wife left him? his life really seemed to spiral after the UCLA game

Agreed. In more ways than one, unfortunately.

I think Sherman left him a STACKED roster and Kliffs OC + JFF propelled his stock.

Yes, they are no longer married. Charlene still lives in CS, or at least did a month ago, I have some family members that go to the same church as her.
And I don’t know if stuff really spiraled after the UCLA game, that was just when we knew he was a dead man walking. Up to that point he still had his supporters (somehow) and people hanging on. After that game I think 95%+ of the fan base was against him.

I gotta agree more with this. The more I’ve seen of Sumlin, I don’t think he was ever that great of a coach. He didn’t call the plays at OU. At UH Briles left him a great QB in Kase Keenum, Sherman left him loads of talent here. Now at Arizona where the cupboard was bare (except for a QB that doesn’t look to be thriving under his system) we see what he can really do....5-8 wins most likely and that’s it. PAC 12 ain’t that good of a conference either.
Arizona will be his last Power 5 HC job.

Not quite. There were still those who were zealously defending Sumlin (even on this board) after the UCLA game, when A&M went 5-1 over the next 6 games. It wasn't until he shite the bed completely against Mississippi State and Auburn at home in consecutive weeks immediately following a bye that he was completely DOA.
Conversely, many, including me, were hoping for a loss to either Nichols (game was tied mid-4th quarter), UL-Lafayette (trailed at halftime) or Arkansas (fricking Bert) in order to speed up Sumlin's exit.

At least that one had the excuse that Trevor Knight was injured.
The following week, when Sumlin blew a 28-13 4th Quarter lead and lost 29-28 at Kyle Field to a true freshman making his first start was what broke most folks.

So Grant Gunnell is the starter for Arizona today. Might be worth a watch to see what A&M's parallel universe would look like had we never fired Sumlin.
