This is all I said, and I'm still entitled to melt about that because our offense isn't worth what we are paying.

And I still stand behind my statement that if we fired Sumlin we should make a play for Les Miles.

What is a very good (but not great) offense worth?

About tree fiddy.

But seriously, my evaluation of our OC will depend more on next year than this one. Who do we have lined up for QB next year?

And it should, Mazzone implemented a whole new system and had to work with what we had player wise. Not saying we weren't stacked at receiver but he's made the best of one summer

Worrying about next year seems like such a waste of energy at this point, considering we're kicking arse this year and there are about 10 variables for 2017 that aren't close to being resolved.

My biggest worry with Mazzone, mostly based on feedback from UCLA fans, is that he was Spav like on the limited sets of plays he calls and predictability of those plays. He hasn't been anything like that and I'm very pleased.

Could you imagine the nightmare that would have been Spav + Trevor? Trevor comes out the gate against Tennessee with an INT and Spav immediately goes into run only 3 plays mode. I honestly believe with Spav as OC and everything else constant, we lose to TN by 3 scores.

I definitely didn't expect our run game to be what it is. I underestimated Knight as a runner and what Turner could do in year one with the line. I also didn't expect us to run read option so much.

Well, we are ranked #6 and we are unbeaten, right? You don't think Mazzone deserves any credit for that?

Have you forgotten who we are? Defending your past melt is much more important than discussing current success to aggy.

UCLA doesn't seem to be missing Mazzone

quote:

Wow. #UCLA's rush offense is terrible (2.95 ypc) - ranked 122 of 128 (99.2 ypg). Leading rusher Soso Jamabo only 195 yds in 5 gms- 39 ypg

Mazzone is better than Spav in that he has the offense executing better, however I worry his playcalling really isn't significantly better. Granted he is hamstrung by Knight's limitations as a pocket passer. I'm hesitant to give him too much credit for the execution as well because a lot of that is Jim Turner fixing our dumpster fire OL.

In all honesty it's hard to really assess this year because, again, we really have a non-existent intermediate passing game especially between the hashes because Knight simply lacks the ability to consistently throw those passes with any accuracy. Everything is short with YAC or the fly/deep post. We'll need to wait until he has someone at QB who has some semblance of intermediate accuracy.

I will say people can't have it both ways: Either we have to wait to truly assess Mazzone because Knight is a poor passer or Mazzone just isn't a very good playcaller. Some want to call Mazzone a savior while simultaneously arguing we are better with Knight than we would be with Allen or Hill. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. If Mazzone is truly much better than Spav, our offense would be dominant with Kenny Hill.

Mazzone isn't a savior but anyone who's watched us will agree he's much better (wasn't hard to be). Knight's running ability and the additions of a very good RB plus a competent OL do make his job easier. These things can work tandem, one party doesn't have to receive all the credit. When you've made the jump we've made its unlikely it is all because of one person/factor

Exactly.

The problem with this thread is when it started we didn't know we were getting Turner back. No offense to Mazzone, but we probably aren't undefeated without Turner.

Heck I wish we would do like so many do with strength and conditioning coaches and make Turner the highest paid OL coach in the country and give him a lifer kind of contract. He is that important to our success.

So Hill is better than Knight and Meacham is better than Mazzone.

And yet somehow Knight+Mazzone has the better offense. Hmmm.
