Not that it matters b/c you'll just laugh and say they suck but IMO this season it would be North Texas led by up and comer second year coach Seth Littrell. They played Iowa very tough until their depth caught up to them, are 6-3 (5-1) looking like a near lock to win CUSA West, and beat this board/TexAgs darkhorse favorite Frank Wilson's UTSA. Littrell has done a very good job turning them around after they bottomed out under Dan McCarney.
People shouldn't sleep on their Arkansas State 5-2 (4-0) win either. Blake Anderson has done a very good job there and should be moving up in pay scale to a better conference either this year or next.
Cincy is in the first year of a new coach (former Ohio State DC Luke Fickell) and while they theoretically should have more talent and it was a road game on their homecoming Tommy Tuberville's laziness really set them back. It will probably take a couple more years for them to recover back to being an 8-10 win team like they used to be. The one thing that should be noted about that game is it started SMU's 3 game trend of giving up 10 or less points in the second half.
Also, I must point out that they did beat the ever living hell out of Tom Herman and Houston last year.

Good write up. Respect sir
So how do you feel about Morris vs. Jimbo? If Jimbo is actually taking us seriously.

Morris' best win at SMU is probably his 38-16 victory last year against #11 University of Houston.
2016 Results
He took over a 2014 team that went 1-11.
2015 record 2 - 10
2016 record 5 - 7
2017 record (so far) 6 - 3
His larger accomplishment at SMU probably isn't a victory against some name school, but the turn around of the program, itself.

If we had the choice between these two? Give me Jimbo.

difference between these two is, with jimbo(if he does well) we'll always be looking over our shoulder for poachers. Morris, if he turns out to be Saban reincarnate, we don't have to worry about him going anywhere. ever. And this could be our only chance to snag Chad.

Just going by resumes Jimbo is the obvious choice.
However, it's not as simple as looking at his 3 ACC titles and the national title in his 8 years as the HC of FSU.
The thing that would scare the hell out of me with Jimbo is that big fat buyout he has at FSU.
If FSU fires him w/o cause he gets $40 million. While his buyout for leaving FSU on his own certainly won't be that big it will still be quite significant. Not only will it cost a ton to pry him away. He is already the 6th highest paid coach at $5.75 million per. At minimum he is going to want $6-$7 million per year and the same $40ish million buyout structure from A&M. This doesn't even include assistant pay.
With the kind of money required we would be locked in with him regardless of results for over half a decade. He could come in set the world on fire and the BMAs wouldn't care. Or he could be the exact same as Sumlin or worse like Fran and we would be trapped for more than half a decade.
Also, I would have to wonder why he would want to leave FSU in the fist place. Does he think the team is about to fall apart and he is trying to get out in front of it? Does he think that Dabo and maybe now Richt have surpassed him which will turn up the heat in Tallahassee? Does he have more players with potential rape allegation issues like Jameis? It be very odd that he would consider leaving just a year after flirting with LSU and getting a massive contract upgrade from it.
One last thing that kind of makes me wonder about him is the 3 ACC titles in 8 years. I know it's whiny to complain about just 3 conference titles but... it is the ACC. It's basically been them and Clemson w/occasional rises from schools like Louisville and Georgia Tech. He is going to be dealing with much more difficult schedules in the SEC West than he has gone up against for the bulk of his HC career. This isn't a major negative. It's just something to thing about.
Honestly, the more I think about it the more I would rather risk Chip Kelly getting us on probation than pay the crap ton of money that will be needed to steal Jimbo. At least with Chip and his likely $6m+ salary we would be able to get rid of him after 4-5 years if it's not working out. This isn't an endorsement of Kelly either. He has far more red flags than Jimbo. It's just Jimbo would so so damn expensive that I don't know if it's even realistic to think about him.

Also, if we are looking at stealing a coach from a P5, I think I call Patterson first. I don't think he is willing to leave but it's worth it to make the phone call.

Its actually not that much at all.
quote:
So, for example, if Fisher leaves, and the university retains none of ten coaches each making $500,000 on one-year deals, Fisher would owe the school $5M within 30 days. Given that many assistants are employed on two- or three-year contracts, this number is believed to be around $7M if Fisher were to leave following the 2017 season.

If he's willing to come to A&M he'll face Saban yearly, deal with LSU's talented team, and even the bottom of the SECW go all in (see Ole Miss).

I do agree something is up. Not sure what. Maybe he's just unhappy and looking to be appreciated more.

3/8 is winning a conference title almost 40% of the time. But still look closer.
2010 - Lost to a solid VT team in the ACC Ship.
2011 - 2nd behind Clemson in the division. His worst season until this year.
2012 - title
2013 - title
2014 - title
2015 - 2nd hind Clemson in the division. They went undefeated this year.
2016 - 3rd behind Clemson & Louisville in the division. They each went 7-1.
I know we like to boast about the SEC, but the ACC had some strong teams between Clemson, Virginia Tech, Lousiville, Georgia Tech, and even Duke (that one year we beat them).
I think Jimbo is going to be expensive as hell if it happens. (MAJOR IF) But I think we'll be paying market value. When is the last time someone the caliber of Jimbo switched schools? Urban is the only name the comes to mind and that was a weird situation.
