He just tweeted about getting used to life after football. Anyone got any insight?

Medical condition forced him to retire.

That's sudden. Didn't he play against SMU?

Not a melt, a serious question, and would explain why we need at least one guard in this next class.

he's been dealing with a back injury off and on afaik. I think he just gave up on it getting better. Was at practice this week so my guess is he tweaked it again. Tough situation because no one wants to quit playing but when a debilitating injury prevents you from playing at a level that you can while hurting your quality of life, it's time to retire.

Serious question here.

If a player on scholarship has to quit due to medical conditions, and the school continues to honor the scholarship so s/he can complete his/her education, does that scholarship count against the 85 limit, or is there a provision to exempt it?

No it doesn't count.

I think they have a different type of scholarship they switch him over to that doesn't count toward the numbers. I'm not sure exactly how it's classified but it definitely doesn't count, and he obviously has the rest of his education paid for

I am glad to see that TAMU will be honoring its commitment to this young man.

Contrary to some posts on this thread, it is not obvious that his education would continue to be covered. Athletic scholarships are normally contingent upon continued participation in athletics. The school has the discretion to find alternate scholarships, but they are not required to do so. Far too many schools DO NOT do so.

Kudos to TAMU for stepping up to the plate.

Find me examples of us cutting a kid loose off scholarship after his career ended because of injury.

I'll hang up and listen

What schools don't?

I think only Mack Brown did that (trapdooring).

Not honoring a scholarship for a player who was injured when there are specific bylaws governing exceptions for a medical retirement is a good way to destroy relationships with H.S. coaches and recruiting pipelines.

Not to mention to even bring a scenario like that up after what the coaching staff did for Cedric Collins is just mind-boggling.

Wait a minute. How is this Hank guy class of '86 when the ring in his avatar says "02"?
