I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but Thanksgiving without Texas A&M and Texas just isn't the same
Love being in the SEC. Love our new conference rivals. But I don't understand why we can't have a premiere non-conference rivalry with tu during rivalry week like Georgia does with Georgia Tech, Florida and Florida State, South Carolina with Clemson, etc.

because Deloss Dodds threw an epic shite fit over us not doing what was in their best interests. The fallout from that for them includes:
- having no end of season rival
- locking themselves into the Big 12 via GOR
- tying Tech to them by guaranteeing the Big 12's survival (the state of Texas could give two shits about TCU or Baylor)
- guaranteeing a massive lawsuit from Baylor should they ever try to move
It's pretty impressive that a 70+ year old dude can be immature enough to have that sort of temper tantrum with such lasting effects but it happened. And they seem to be awful proud of it all the while bitching about the repercussions.

Very true.
I'm sure this has probably been discussed at length on here already (If so, feel free to disregard

Bill Powers would have to admit defeat, as would Mack Brown.
We'll wait from the fall out over the Kearney suit, then see how softened up they are.

Powers is a minor obstacle, honestly I don't think he cares much and don't know that he is long for his job anyway. Mack has been quoted in favor of the game and he knows it will help him in recruiting.
There are rumors that Patterson favors it and it certainly makes sense. He wants to fill up DKKKR and make money and putting A&M on the schedule does that. They will fight hard to have it be TDay weekend but we need to tell them no, early season or nothing.
When I was in school we always played LSU first and Texas last and it was awesome. Playing a big OOC rivalry game really got you in to football. Many benefits of playing that game early including the fact we could lose to Texas early and in virtually any scenario still be capable of not only winning the SEC but being in the Playoff, an 11-1 SEC Champ that has rolled off 10 or so in a row will almost certainly be in.
I also don't think we need to worry about establishing ourselves anymore. We are in the SEC and that isn't changing. Our identity has already shifted greatly and honestly bringing back the game as an early season contest will only make that point more clear.
Mainly though it's just a win/win and a good business decision to resume the series under the right terms (early season, neutral refs, home and home, no LHN, resume playing in all sports).

You mention this game, then try to insinuate that the A&M/LSU rivalry is being "forced."
Not trying to get on your case too much (I know I'm late to the thread), but the only reason you believe the Gulf War doesn't seem as big to you now is because you're too young to remember what made it great.

As for the OP, it will always be "time" for us to play t.u. They are our rival. Nothing will change that, regardless of whether we play another down on the gridiron or not.
But as for whether it's "time" to enter into another athletic contract with our friends in Austin........my answer is "not yet."
Look, those of you that know me personally know that I'm not only a 2nd generation Aggie, but my dad is originally from Bryan/College Station and my family still lives in College Station. I grew up going Yell Practices and on-campus Bonfires. Hating t.u. (yes, I will call them "t.u.," and IDGAF what you think about that moniker--we're hardly the only ones that do that with a rival) is in my blood. Growing up I knew without asking that the two schools that were off limits for me to attend were ohio (in columbus), and t.u.
When the news first broke about our SEC move, the ONLY thing I thought I'd miss was the game with the horns (especially when it became clear that they were not willing to play us OOC). And I'm not gonna lie, these past two Thanksgivings have just not felt "right" not playing our arch rival.
But what HAS felt "right" is playing the rest of our conference mates week in and week out. The SEC is definitely where we belong as an athletic program, and it's been so awesome having a vested interest in the titanic clashes that go on week in and week out in this association of schools. IMHO, that trumps the loss of one traditional rival (as huge a loss as it is). A&M is NOT defined by our hatred of the sips, just like Bonfire was not only about the "burning desire to beat the hell outta t.u.," but also about "the undying love that all Aggies have for Texas A&M."
I believe that the game will eventually come back, and it will be a big deal when it does. BUT, it needs to be on terms that benefit both schools, and the climate right now is not conducive to such an arrangement. As much grief as we give LSU about wimping out on our OOC rivalry with them when the odds were tilted heavily in our favor, how much moreso do you think the situation would deteriorate when dealing with the sips. Their track record does not inspire trust. In fact, the whole reason we moved in the first place was because of their propensity to misrepresent intentions and deceive conference mates. This past season alone (iowa state game), we saw how it is STILL a very political game when you play the longhorns--why are some of us in such a hurry to return to that morass of frustration and uneven playing fields? It makes no sense to me for us to play them now or in the near future.
ETA: sorry for aggressor-ing

Here's my.02. The game will come back when the time is right. When that is I don't know. Until then we have a game almost every week that I look forward to. I don't see that changing because the SEC has always been strong. Yes there were years when they weren't the strongest but they were still strong. I only hope that politics and posturing don't force things upon us that we don't want. My family has bern connected to A&M in some manner (student or employee) for over 50 years and I understand the rivalry between us and the whorns. So it'll happen when it happens.
I purposely didn't go into all the bs that has gone on between the schools and just stated my feelings on the subject.

Agreed. I'd love to see this game on Thanksgiving again. And no offense meant to LSU - I think that game might turn into a meaningful rivalry (assuming we win one of the damn things), but it will never approach A&M vs. Texas. It just won't. Not ever.
Dodds is about to be gone, and to me he was the biggest problem. I don't see why we can't renew this thing as early as 2015 in an annual Thanksgiving game. If you're hung up on Thanksgiving and somehow validating the Texas program - well, you're just wrong. UT isn't going away, ever, and won't be down for long whether we play them or not. Both schools owe this game to football fans in Texas. And there's no better time than Thanksgiving. It's consistently the best week of college football, every year. Why would you not want to be part of that?

If and when the game comes back, I pray it's not Thanksgiving weekend. I agree it's not the same, but here's why we can't give them that slot back:
1.) That game with LSU will increase in relevance as we get better and eventually will be a showdown for the right to rep the West in ATL a la the Iron Bowl we just witnessed. We will definitely be a factor in the biggest week of college football playing LSU then, texas notwithstanding
2.) IF it ever comes up again where they want to act up and cancel the series again (always a possibility with them no matter who's in charge--history has borne that out), we won't be left in a lurch again on such a big college football weekend because we'll always have a conference mate filling that slot.
We can play texas again in a HUGE midseason shootout, or a season opener like we used to do with LSU. But I don't trust them not to frick up our thanksgiving weekend again.

t.u. stands to gain as much exposure and TV money from the game as A&M does. I don't trust them, either. But they're not morons. If it gets set up I can't see them pulling the plug unless we do something crazy like win 10 years in a row.
I just can't see A&M vs. LSU ever being on the same level as, say, Florida vs. Florida State or USC vs. Clemson, or even Georgia vs. Georgia Tech. Those are games the respective states get very excited about. We inarguably had the biggest game in Texas during the biggest college football weekend. I'd like to see it come back.

What if we win 8 or 9 of 10, though? Call me gunshy, but I could easily envision them doing a 180 and trying to back out trying to save face (under the guise of something else, of course, like scheduling conflicts). I don't trust 'em a bit.

I agree, and like I said, I want it to come back, too.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.

It would be a great way to kick off the season, but damn if that isn't going to be a gauntlet if we go to 9 games.
Game 1 - tu
Game 2 - South Carolina
Game 3 - La Tech/New Mexico/some other out of state crappy school
Game 4 - Crappy school but what if we mix in like Miami or Florida State or something
Game 5 - Arkansas
Game 6 - Alabama
Game 7 - Ole Miss
Game 8 - SMU/Rice/UTEP/other
Game 9 - Mizzou/Kentucky/Vanderbilt
Game 10 - Mississippi State
Game 11 - Georgia/Florida/Tennessee
Game 12 - LSU
That will be the shake down of our schedule every year.
