But thank god he took Mond/Ausbon over Stidham.

What a disaster Stidham has turned into.

I don't think he's the problem. A lot of the offensive issues Auburn has this season mirror what Sumlin went through here.

Predictability.

Remember how Alabama could tell when Sumlin was running or passing by looking at our O-Line's knuckles?? Almost the same thing is happening with Auburn. Jeremy Pruitt was able to call which player the ball was going to by the 4th Quarter. You can also tell if it's a run or pass based on the players Auburn has out there.

Mahomes and Hill were different classes. Hill was Kliff's guy, not Sumlin's and he almost flipped to Tech at the end because Manziel came back.

We took Kyle Allen the following year when Mahomes went to Tech. Mahomes was widely considered a lock for baseball.

Yeah Mahomes would have been a top 5 round pick out of HS if he committed to baseball, I saw a thing with Michael Kopech who played in his district saying he thought Mahomes was better than him

It wasn't knuckles. It was spacing differently for run v pass. Hell, they even called it out on national broadcasts.

yea that was in 2016 under mazzone. but the year before that, i was on rivals and a poster claimed to have talked to a GA at bama that said the bama defensive staff straight up laughed at how predicatble spavs offense was. those 3 pick 6's were all by design.

No wait, I'm stupid. It was Avery Gennessy who gave away the plays.

So who was the team where the Guards gave away the plays with their knuckles? Maybe it was Arkansas??? frick, I forgot.

Manziel had to come back. He wasn’t eligible to leave yet. Maybe you meant Hill almost flipped or transferred to tech because Kliff left?

Yep, you're right, he wasn't eligible

I can't remember the exact details any more but I think there was a lot of stuff then that Manziel was too small and wouldn't leave early and the idea of sitting behind Johnny for 3 years had Hill spooked late in the process.

Auburn has always had a legit run game. They don't have that this year and it shows. Looks like the away win streak will continue.

How much of Gus’s run game has been dependent on a genuine running threat from the QB? Have always assumed that it was integral, which is why I assumed that Stidham was not a good match there. In spite of his negative press, fully expect Stidham to play at the next level.

The problem isn’t that Stidham can’t run well, it’s that Gus still uses a lot of concepts developed for an offense with a running QB.

For instance, they run a lot of power read which is one of the plays they spammed with incredible success in 2013 with Marshall (one of most instinctive QB runners maybe ever). If nobody is concerned about the QB pulling that and running for a big gain it’s incredibly easy to defend because a backside defender can negate the numbers advantage you get at the POA with power. In fact, it’s a type of read you really shouldn’t use with an average running QB because you lose a weak side blocker who is pulling and unlike the zone read it almost always requires the QB to beat at least one defender one on one at the second level to get more than a 4-5 yard gain. In a standard zone read you have a keep side tackle or TE blocking at the second level if the QB keeps.

Gus essentially continues to use concepts he wrecked shopped with when he had Cam and Marshall and they don’t work as well because nobody is worried about Stidham breaking off a 70 yard TD run.
