No, in the real world, there are 4 factors.

Merit
Performance
Timing
Politics

The one that is weighted the highest is timing.

Unfortunately, that's the description of most places with more than 100 employees. I can see a state school being much worse.

Which is why I don't want us to fire him. 8-5 is better than we were doing when I was in College Station. I won't lie, I won't cry if he leaves for the NFL, but I also don't want him gone just because he screwed up. He is one OC hire away from being at least 10-2 for the season.

Not to derail the standard "Everything is awful at A&M" rants, but there is another very real possibility no Aggies are considering: that Herman actually wants to stay at UH for a while.

I know it's standard Texags reasoning that Cougar High is a joke and Houston is nothing but one big ghetto, but some people actually like living here and he can be very well taken care of if he stays and builds something.

Why are people so in love with Herman? All signs (well, to me at least) point to a one year wonder. He won't be able to sustain success at UofH, in my opinion, once the defense he inherited is gone.

With all due respect, I'm not sure you're very familiar with what he inherited. He's proven himself to be nothing but a great coach, at Ohio State and UH.

That said, I agree it's irrational to talk about hiring the guy away after only one season as head coach. But there's a big percentage of Aggie internet posters who don't really follow football outside of A&M, and their first thought is "Let's just go buy us that Coogah High coach!"

I think it would be ok if we started expanding coaching searches beyond Houston.

Amen. I was curious as to why he wouldn't co e, but I don't have a problem with not offering. I guess the big draw is recruiting???

A top 20 defense and a bunch of skill players ready to run his style of offense.

I get that this season was UofH's best season evah! and doing what he did is short of a miracle in 3rd Ward. But jumping on a guy who won without his own players is pretty damn reckless. He inherited a lot of good players and Tony Levine had a good eye for talent, just sucked at winning games. Let's at least see if he can sustain this success (I doubt it) before we jump on him like a bitch in heat.

You don't have to worry, because this time next year he will be with another team and ten years from now we will be speculating if we lost out on another urban Meyer (though it sounds like we may have never had a chance). I think he's going to be that good.

He sounds pretty sincere about building something there. Could be coach speak of course, but he was pretty emotional. I've also seen him up close and personal with some of the big UH people. They weren't sold on Levine, but were sold on Herman from the get-go. They can make his life in Houston very comfortable on top of the salary.

He's young, a member of MENSA, called plays and ran an offense, won a natty with his 3rd string QB, won the conference at Houston, and has a top 25 recruiting class.

Sumlin has done none of these things.
We were sold a bill of goods with Sumlin being an offensive guru, he called plays one half season and then his HC (slocum) was fired.

Herman and Chavis would be an absolute home run. He uses the spread to run power run concepts, if his OC wandered he'd be able to fix it unlike Sumlin who is clueless.

You mean a former linebacker isn't an offensive whiz? Shocker

Don't get me wrong, he has impressed, but as a candidate it's a risk I don't think A&M should take this year (if Sumlin gets blackmailed into resigning). Next year? Sure, if he is still winning and Sumlin can't fix the offense. But as of today, there really isn't much to judge him by as a HC. For all we know, he could either be the next Urban Meyer or the next Larry Coker.

To me, its still hard to overlook the little things. He landed in a comfy place with good players (considering the competition they play, UofH had some of the best in the AAC). His first year at UofH has a lot of similarities to Sumlin's first year at A&M. Sumlin had Tim DeRuyter's defense bleed over (Not the greatest defense, but they got the job done) and a lot of NFL talent on the roster ready to go on offense. Herman walks into a similar situation with a solid Houston defense and skill players that were ready to go from day 1. Next year, I see at least 3 loses in UofH's schedule (Oklahoma, Navy, and Lousville). Let's see how great of a coach he is when he has to develop his own players and maintain a good defense. Next year, the outlook on his career should become a bit more clear.
