I can actually visualize what is going on during the play instead of having to consult the gametracker 3 plays later. What a concept!

I tuned in for a while during the ULM game while watching with the TV on mute and was surprised to find that “The player” has finally graduated. Also, all our players actually have numbers now and “falling forward” doesn’t mean a 7 yard gain.

Also, our radio announcer no longer assigns the gender of "touchdown" to our players.

Watching the actual play as he calls it is a great demonstration of what we’ve been missing all these years.
Play by play announcing is a real professional trade. You actually have to hone it and practice it and be serious about perfecting the craft over time.
The issue with Dave was that he was just a guy with a great voice, not a real professional play by play guy dedicated to the actual craft. An average Joe football fan could call a game as well (or rather, poorly) as Dave in a technical sense, it just wouldn’t sound as good because they wouldn’t have his voice.

South always reminded me of the local yokel in my East Texas hometown who sold insurance, was a fishing guide, and called our high school football and baseball games on the radio.
Both nice guys, but completely incompetent at the mic.
