My baseball feelings are sad today. Adrian Beltre Retired. Going to be quite a bit less entertaining watching the Rangers this coming year.

Hard to believe he was better from ages 35-39 than he was from 26-30.

Nah he regressed along the same lines as other all time greats. His drop off was not as pronounced as all time very good players. I would say he maintained and couple with the fact that the later years of his career were spent in hitter friendly parks vs the caverns in LA and Seattle contributed to the numbers.
ETA: His name has never come up in connection with anything PED related either. Not even suspicion from anyone around the game. All of his teammates at all of his stops along the way talk about his work ethic. So his numbers to me do not cause alarm at all regardless of the era he started out in.

Gagne said 8O% of the Dodgers used HGH while he was there. So there is some suspicion.

Beltre doesn’t really fit the profile of a user at all to me. He’s always been fairly big and his body didn’t really change a ton and he always hit for power. He simply became a better hitter if you look at his numbers. More selective and higher contact rates. He wasn’t Luis Gonzalez going from a light hitting platoon outfielder to hitting 50 home runs

Hank Aaron didn’t play into the steroid era. For every Aaron you find I could find 1000 other players that petered out. He’s the exception, not the rule. However during the early part of when Beltre played tons of guys continued to play into their later years. Some even go better as they got older. How many spikes for 20 some HRs to 40 some home runs do you normally see?

The only time Beltre hit 40+ home runs was as a 24-25 year old. He struggled a ton with injuries early in his career. Again, nothing fundamental about his power profile changed if you look at his stats, he started walking more and striking out less and got to his power more consistently at a later age because of it.
He was also one of the most hyped baseball prospects I can remember when he was a kid in the Dodgers system. He never lacked for natural talent

Admitting you thought Sosa and McGwire were clean isn’t going to help your credibility on the subject
