You have to hire a coach who has made the NCAA tournament as an at large, not one who has to win his conference tournament.

Tony Barone (1991 at large berth with Creighton)

Melvin Watkins (1996, 1997 at large berths with UNC-Charlotte)

Billy Gillispie (2004 at large berth with UTEP)

Mark Turgeon (2006 at large berth with Wichita State)

Billy Kennedy (NO AT LARGE BERTHS WITH MURRAY STATE)

Even Melvin Watkins and Tony Barone knew how to make the NCAA tournament without having to win the conference tournament.

Billy Kennedy is twice the coach Mark Turgeon is and Twice the man that billy kennedy is.

You do realize that at least 2 of the examples you are giving as following the "rule" were complete dumpster fires don't you?

I think Kennedy needs to go but will always wonder what might have been without the Parkinson's. He came out of the gate killing it in recruiting but the timing of his diagnosis couldn't have been worse. He has never seemed to "own" his team.

Oh well, hopefully they can keep it from getting too embarrassing this year and then throw a Brinks truck at a great young coach.

Probably similar results.

Even though Watkins was a complete and total dumpster fire, he made the NCAA tournament in a ROUGH conference both years he was at Charlotte. Keep in mind that Conference USA was a GREAT basketball conference in the late 90's with the following programs:

Charlotte
Cincinnati
DePaul
Houston
Louisville
Marquette
Memphis
South Florida
Southern Miss
St. Louis
Tulane
UAB

Also, Barone made the NIT in 1994 IIRC.

CGSC: I think you are probably correct in that Kennedy would have similar results even had he not had Parkinson's. His track record has a pattern of taking 4-5 seasons before getting a team to the NCAA's.

At $1.3 Million/year, that's unacceptable.

Your list of examples hardly dictates that should be a cardinal rule

Don't hire a major college coach with a serious disease.

I have no personal dislike for BK. He seems like a great guy who cares about his team, but he's not producing and I can't see things getting better.

Barone was hired when I was in school and got dominated in a weak SWC, he was 76-120 in 7 seasons with 1 winning season. Horrific cultural fit with A&M as well. By all accounts a really good human being but damn it was hard to care at all about basketball with him as coach.

Barone was pretty good at Creighton. So what? He also ended up being an Assistant and then Interim HC for the Grizzlies somehow.

Watkins managed to take our program to even lower depths somehow. I agree he did a decent job at UNC Charlotte.

What I don't see is a pattern of relevance. So we hired 2 coaches that should have been better than Kennedy in theory but were worse but somehow that means the problem was the Kennedy hire?

I agree Kennedy needs to go. I just don't see his resume as being significantly worse than either of the other 2 prior to being hired.

I also don't get the point. Byrne hired him and Byrne is gone. Byrne also hired BCG and Turge though.

What I think we can probably agree on though is we need to back up the Brinks truck and get a legit coach.
