i was one of the few to like the hire from the beginning.. alot was so set on gruden that they couldnt be excited. But butch was an awesome hire, wins everywhere he has been, and already setting recruiting trail on fire. He knows what tn is all about and embraces the traditions and truely WANTS to be here and is his dream job. More excited now than i have been in years for tn football, if he can pull a big upset and get us back bowling, i think everyone will realize how good of hire it is..

oh and kentucky

I love what he's done on the recruiting trail. Hell, there's no way you can't. I hope his coaching matches up. I would describe myself as being cautiously optimistic.

He's recruiting pretty well, but I wouldn't say excited. Really need to see results.

I've learned to temper my expectations, but Knoxville has a whole new vibe surrounding it

i just hope fans are willing to give him 2 to 3 seasons to build his team. He is doing a great job recruiting which points to bright future, so i hope the negavols can take it easy on him this season if he only wins 6-7 games.

I'm glad to hear that. After the Dooley and Phillips years, we both need a fresh start. to a good season for you guys (except of course for one game )

I think y'all will be better coached this year, but these aren't the players he's recruited. You should be better mentally. I'd be cautiously optimistic this year, and look for some marked improvement in 2014. Good luck, except when you come to Columbia MO!

We'd better better coached with Radio at the helm instead of Dooley.

I'm not expecting 10 win seasons right off the bat. What I do want to see is players actually developing and getting better. I want to see UT actually play the second half of games and not give up when down.

That's what I meant about being better mentally. Last year, it seemed like y'all sort of lost focus in the second half of some games, and fell apart. And with the level of talent you had, I didn't get that. That's what let us back into our game in Knoxville and gave us the chance to win it.

I think Butch will have your guys more focused and hungry.

If you had to weigh Butch where do you stand on?

a) recruiting ability
b) book coaching
c) in game coaching
d) media presence
e) intangibles

a) I would give him a B or B+. This class will likely rank 6-10, which is solid, but not elite. Consistent top 5 classes for an A.
b) Don't know what this means.
c) C. He won at an above average rate in the Big East, but I am extremely worried about his defensive staff. Jancek and Martinez have already been massive failures in the SEC.
d) B. He is probably the best at this in program history. An A would be reserved for the John Caliparis and Bruce Pearls of the world.
e) He is very, very corny. He's always positive though, we'll see how it plays out.

Sort of a catch all to pre game coaching vs in game coaching as some coaches excel at one or the other but few excel at both. Book coaching is watching films and drawing up plays and other non game day decision making. Does this make it clearer?

So, essentially, first half vs. second half coaching?

Probably, but some coaches can adjust in the first few series and some never adjust even with end of the game in sight. Might view it as Risk Adverse vs Risk Taker.

a) recruiting ability: A+. What he has done with the 2014 class is nothing short of remarkable. We'll end up with a top 5 class, and that makes blood flow to my dick.

b) book coaching: I assume this means X's and O's? He's done well at previous jobs and has done a good job, as far as I can tell, of tailoring the schemes to the players. So, I'll toss out an uninformed B+.

c) in game coaching: no clue

d) media presence: who gives a shite?

e) intangibles: I love his energy and excitement. So, A.

How in the world can you say this? What has he done on the recruiting trail other than kick arse and takes names?

He closed very poorly last year and he has not recruited elite linemen on either side of the ball. Land Lambert, Hendrix, Mosley, and Barnett and he satisfies half of that, but the o-line pull has been disappointing at best.

Just posting to say that I was in Nashville earlier this week for meetings, and bought my father in law a UT polo shirt at a Sams Club, orange with a white T, and the word Tennessee on the back below the collar.
For those who remember my thread from last year about the UK/Tennessee game, my FIL is a huge UT fan, so whenever I'm in Tennessee I try to find him something UT to bring back to him.
