A kid in the ATL Metro [Marietta] that is blowing up is Tyren Jones, a 5'9", 195 pound junior RB. Jones is originally from Louisiana and has burst onto the scene after transferring from Lassiter High School down the road [as both schools are in Marietta] to Walton High School. His Walton team is 6-0 in Georgia's largest classification, AAAAA

Jones is the Atlanta Journal Constitution Georgia High School Player of the Year at the 1/2 point of the season [Bama commit Kenyan Drake is currently #2 and USCe commit Darius English is #5] and he is also 1 of 7 Juniors nationwide currently being considered for the MaxPreps National Junior of the Year Award.

A couple of his runs [linked below] from a recent game in which he had 279 yards on 21 carries even though he only played 2.5 quarters due to a big lead. Jones had 4 other runs called back in this game of 66, 60, 27, and 20 yards or he would have had 452 yards on 25 carries in 2.5 quarters of action.

He just burst onto the scene and got his 1st 2 offers last week, from Vandy and Duke.

As mentioned in the OP he was at Lassiter High School which runs a heavy pass-based spread system and transferred to Walton who is a run-heavy team. Walton and Lassiter were both in the Georgia AAAAA top 10 and undefeated and played last Friday night. Jones led Walton to a 34-10 route over Lassiter with more than 250 all-purpose yards.

Jones played in the Army All-American Game for 8th graders in San Antonio, Tx in January 2009 and I'm told he was the MVP of the Game.

He's been invited to UGA, Bama, Auburn, and Georgia Tech over the past 1-2 weeks by the staff of each school. He's definitely on Bama's radar as he is a faster, quicker version of Mark Ingram (comparable size) as he's ~4.40-4.42 guy as a 16 year old. He runs track for his high school and local club team and expects to be in the 4.35-4.39 range next year as a high school senior.

A couple of videos of Jones back in 2007 as a 7th grader where he scored 47 TDs on the season. Impeccable, precocious ability in these videos has carried over.

Anything about this that we should be concerned about? Seems like most athletes involved in club teams receive extra NCAA scrutiny.

No. Track clubs are nothing comparable to AAU basketball as you have kids, boys & girls, from age 6-18 on these club teams.

With track being a non-revenue sport there is really no incentive/money involved. Many of the elite skill players run to improve their speed during the football offseason.

I'm not 100% certain of his family history in terms of when or why he relocated from Louisiana to the ATL Metro.

I recently learned that his dad played Slot WR for Grambling in the early to mid 1990s and he was supposedly a stud on the field as well....so it seems that he definitely has strong routes in Louisiana.

I have heard that he likes UGA, LSU, Bama, and Ohio State but given that he played at a passing school, Lassiter, as a 9th and 10th grader before transferring to Walton for what is his 11th grade season where he is having a chance to shine in the running game....his recruitment is just now beginning to take-off.

I've communicated with several high school recruiting analysts and he is expected to be the #1 RB in the state of Georgia next year for the 2013 class and likely 1 of the top RBs in the nation.

I'd love to have him at Bama as he is a special talent on the football field.

I was at the game last week in Walton's 34-10 win over Lassiter and Vanderbilt Coach James Franklin arrived during the game in a helicopter.

Kid's recruitment is starting to heat up.

-Led the state of Georgia in rushing in 2011 with 2,375 yards and 34 rushing TDs.
-Over 3,000 All-Purpose yards and 38 Total TDs on the 2011 season
-Likely to be named the Georgia Offensive Player of the Year for 2011
-Lead Walton team to the Georgia AAAAA State Championship Game and a 14-0 record before they were beaten by National Top 5 team Grayson and Robert Nkemdiche this past Saturday
-Walton is now ranked in the top 50 Nationally in several National Polls after their loss to Grayson.....They were in the top 25 Nationally in the ESPN FAB50 and Rivals 100 prior to the Grayson loss.
-Now has offers from Georgia, Oklahoma St, Vandy, & Duke.
-Says he wants to be evaluated by Alabama and LSU

UGA will be in the Mix. They are supposedly gonna land his teammate the "finisher"

UGA already has Crowell and a verbal from 2012 RB, Keith Marshall. If they land Todd Gurley [who I think is the top RB in the 2012 class] and Tyren Jones....who I think is the top 2013 RB.......IF UGA can get some decent lineman.....their running game will be virtually unstoppable.

New video for 2011 for Jones.

What's interesting is we already have arguably the best RB in 2013 Derrick Henry from Florida.

LINK

This would be 3rd #1 RB in a row (depending on the service you look at).

Personally, I think Henry is too big/tall to play RB in college. Take a look at this 20 year (1991-2010 Data) study of NFL RBs with the outcome stating that 5'9" is the IDEAL Height of an NFL RB with weight in the 205-215 range.

MOST effective tall RBs have been 4.3x guys in the 40 that are just athletic freaks (ie. Jim Brown, Herschel Walker, Eric Dickerson, Bo Jackson, Marcus Dupree-pre injury, Adrian Peterson, Darren McFadden).

There have been guys like Marcus Allen and Matt Forte that are 6'2" and up that weren't 4.3 burners......but often times the taller backs have that elite speed.

Ideal NFL RB is 5'9", 205-215 with BMI in the 30-32 range.

I would not be surprised to see Henry stay at home when it comes down to it.

Completely agree with the fact that he is a kid and we all see how quickly recruiting can change when we're dealing with teenagers, but with the bond he's made with Ramsey and how him and Matthews have been recruiting Foster and Nkemdiche for the 2013 class to UGA, i like our chances for him to keep his word, just like you like your chances of keeping Foster.

I could be wrong, but isn't he already 20 years old? I swear I heard that about him, although I could be mistaken.

The kid runs age group track and is 16 years old. Will turn 17 later this month....late December. Hence, he is in the correct grade.

LMAO.....Who in the heck starts these FALSE rumors about these kids. Probably other RB prospects.

Thanks for clearing that up. The people circulating the rumor were all Georgia fans.

I do recall seeing someone "claim" he was older on an AJC blog a few months back. However, I have kids that run age group track and Jones ran in the 16 year old group this summer......and track clubs are very stringent about ensuring that athletes are the correct age via original birth certificates.

Also, with myself living in Marietta.....about 4-5 miles from Walton High where Jones attends High School.....I've seen the kid play since he was a 12 year old back in 2007. He definitely looked like a 12 year kid back [was probably ~5'3"] then although he dominate in scoring 47 TDs during the season and leading his team to an undefeated record.
