Tennessee recruiting question

Serious question... How are they able to sign so many kids the past few years. Right now they have 29. Last year they had 31.
I know every school over-signs sometimes because they can tell when a couple kids won't be eligible, but 10 extra recruits over the past two classes? How is that possible?

Butch has been processing the frick out of Dooley's slaw.
We also had 2 blueshirts (Bruce and Perry) so technically, VOLS only signed 27.

Yep.
Next class is going to be small too. I've seen anywhere from 18-20 total.

What the hell is a blue shirt?

And we have a few straight up walkons as well. Like Ethan Wolfe's little brother Eli and Jancek's kid.

Blue shirt is a preferred walkon that automatically gets granted a scholly in the fall.

I don't understand how they get over the hard 25 by that much 2 years straight, but good on Butch for figuring it out.

Basically as long as you're not formally recruited (meaning you don't take an OV) you can blue shirt. A blue shirt is when you arrive on campus and whoa you just happen to be great so here's your scholly - boom you count toward a different class.

It's basically a preferred walkon but that technically doesn't exist under NCAA rules.

We had former UT Coach Bill Battle (now Bama AD) fax us Saban's book on processing. Butch added a few calculations to it and improved it and boom.

It's of his brick by brick approach.
Sign as many as possible, sketchy stuff happens, players leave/transfer.

We back counted 6 last year from the EE's to past classes.
This year we are forward counting 4, but as of now only 2 players have been officially announced as Blue-Shirts (Bruce and Perry).
Blue Shirts can't take an Official Visit, they can't have in home meetings with coaches or in school.
They are free to sign anywhere they want and flip from TN up until the day they arrive on campus on August 1st. once they sign up they immediately go on scholarship and are counted as an counter towards the 25 for 2016 class.
Hope that clears it up.

Kid doesn't sign a LOI on signing day. Basically, just shows up on the first day of school and enrolls then is subsequently put on scholarship that day.
They're free to sign anywhere else in between though so you don't see it often because it's quite risky.

Isn't that a grey shirt?
GS's don't show up on campus till Jan 2016 like an EE.
BS's get to come on campus and be on scholarship and on the team this fall.
BIG Difference.

No a gray shirt is when you pay your own way for year and then get put on scholly the next year. With a gray shirt you can either enroll in school or wait. Most enroll and pay their own way for a year.

Thanks. I imagine many of these coaches and compliance office people would make great tax attorneys or CPAs with they way they can bend the numbers and rules juuuust a little bit.
They'd make fantastic bankers and money launderers - that's for sure.

I bet we end up with 23 or 24 next year too. Butch can't help himself.
