I found this article to be pretty interesting. Of course, my team being near the top probably helps.

Pinkel has done a fantastic job with player development. One of the best in the country, hands down.

Congrats on the 5* DT BTW

Edited: misread the graph.

How much "better" can #1 get? It's literally impossible for Alabama to be near the top of a list like this.

Only teams with middle of the road recruiting can "overachieve".

Should it be thrown out because Alabama isn't #1?

No - but it is a tad silly to even include teams that recruit at an elite level in it. Alabama, Georgia, FSU, LSU. It's impossible for them to be anywhere but the middle of this chart. Alabama has finished in the Top 3 or 4 of Massey every year for the last 6 and they are in the middle of the chart.

I guess my point is this type of chart should really only compare teams that finished below 20 or so in recruiting (GT, Mizzou, Kansas State, etc). The graphic gives the false impression that somehow schools like Alabama and Ohio State are underachieving comparatively.

That's all.

Interesting analysis on the surface.

It could be more in-depth as far as accounting for different sources recruiting rankings and for teams that recruit into a system that doesn't necessarily chase stars (GT with the option, Baylor with the new-age air raid, etc.).

I just think there is a little bit of a bias because recruits are ranked partially based on which schools offer them and how successful those schools have been. Everyone is familiar with the 'bama bump', so it seems like it is kind of begging the question in some ways

I disagree with your premise that it's impossible for those school to be anywhere but the middle of the chart. It is mathematically possible for Alabama to be #1. Alabama would have had to win more games and by larger margins.

Well yeah it makes sense, if you have all 5 and 4 star kids, they're at the top. It's a lot harder to get better when you're the best.

It isn't, though. Alabama finished at #1 in recruiting and #1 in Massey then they are equal to their expectation. They cannot exceed expectations. It isn't possible.

I'm not saying it is a bad premise, I just think the layout (of this and most of these types of discussions) is to make anyone who recruits well seem like they don't develop talent.

Quick thoughts

Its impossible for a top 10 recruiter to be in the top 10 of this chart especially for Bama. Bama has had the composite #1 class for years now. Anything short of #1 and they are just going to fall.

This chart tells you what big name programs are in the dumps. Michigan, Florida, Miami, Texas and Notre Dame are hitting way below their recruitment rankings.

Poor Vandy.... Holy shite

I'm surprised Texas A&M and Tennessee, and are so high. I didn't think they came that close to living up their potential.

The Coaches of the top 10 teams on this chart deserve a lot of respect.

Just because Alabama was #1 in Massey does not mean they could not have performed better. They could have had a higher Massey score.
