Pinkel really pays no attention to stars. Kid wasn't even on recruiting sites

LINK

Read the portion on DE Charles Harris. The kid never played football until his junior year. Never had a rivals or 247 page until after Missouri offered him late in the game. Kid was a basketball player. Pinkel watched as much or more basketball film than he did football film. But Pinkel sees whatever he sees and the kid has worked his way into the 2 deep this spring. Sounds like the kid has a work ethic out of this world.

You recruit 85 Charles Harris and see how many games you win.

I love stories like that. I believe GT has a similar player from England who only played for one year. I'm not sure if he's on their 2 deep or not thought.

We don't recruit 85 of them, but we round out our class with these types and we win plenty and send plenty to the league. Specifically the first round.

Stars might matter for your guy, but our guy is flat out better at development.

The developing part is iffy.

I guess since we can't get in the discussions on here when people are talking about their schools signing 4-5 star players we can at least come on here and say "Pinkel is good at finding 2-3 star under the radar players and developing them" Just imagine how good we could be if he could sign some real stud players! Guess we will never know!

I'll give Pinkel credit for one thing and that is when he says a player is going to be good he is usually correct most of the times.(90%)

Obviously you can't have a team full of guys like that. But I do think it's a testament to the ability of GP to put faith in how he recruits and find guys that others probably wouldn't think twice about and not just that, but then coach them up. On top of that, the kid is just a good story. I think there's more to the back story of his "family" situation but I'd have to go back and find that article.

Pinkel is one of the best at finding and developing talent.

The second a kid has serious interest expressed by LSU/Bama, etc, he gets rated 3 stars almost immediately. It's not that LSU/Bama don't find diamonds in the rough.

Sometimes they don't work out - wasn't Ford the 330lb OL from Ohio that didn't play until his SR year of HS? Kid never managed to get the mechanics down. More often than not, Pinkel is able to get these kids coached up though.

There isn't a coach in the sec who bases his recruiting on stars/rankings.

You can have some pretty salty players by digging around.
Mike Sherman managed to do that by getting guys like Damontre Moore (All American), Mike Evans (1st rounder), and Jarvis Harrison (soon to be 3 year starter and will get drafted).
All of those guys were basically unheard of but they were physically very gifted.

Of course some of them will be busts, but you have to do what you can do.

Apparently as many SEC division titles as Bama the past 4 years?
