9 hail from state of Georgia, 18 from Texas, 12 from Florida, and 9 from California. The top recruit from each state, 'cept California, headed out of state, for now.

On the surface that is almost crazy. but, we live in a much more mobile society and kids don't hesitate to go out of state today. Then, with ESPN, 247 and all of the TV and internet resources out there today, kids see games from programs they used to be somewhat shielded from.

They are much more open to leaving their state. Nice find!

There is some talent in Georgia, especially if you compare it against the population of other states. No doubt about it.

It’s funny how we all laugh at FSU and how far they’ve fallen, but that name still has cache with kids. Unlike Tennessee, they can turn it around in a couple of years with all of the advantages they have.
If they ever get serious about facility upgrades and spending money they’ll hurt everyone in recruiting.

Article says he is originally from Florida, but Florida State is an odd choice given their issues.

one example of the mobile nature of recent athletes is, of teams that finished in the top-20 in recruiting last season, its all-time top recruit, since '99, has hailed from out of state, with exception of Texas, A&M, LSU, Georgia, Wisconsin and Maryland.

Alabama - Cyrus Kouandjio - Maryland
Ohio St - Terrelle Pryor - Pennsylvania
Georgia - Justin Fields - Georgia
Clemson - Trevor Lawrence - Georgia
LSU - L Fournette - Louisiana
Oregon - K Thibodeaux - California
A&M - Myles Garrett - Texas
USC - Joe McKnight - Louisiana
N.D. - Jimmy Clausen - California
Sooners - Adrian Peterson - Texas
Miami - D.J. Williams - California
Florida - Ronald Powell - California
Michigan- Rashan Gary - New Jersey
N.C. - Marvin Austin - D.C.
Vols - Bryce Brown - Kansas
Badgers - Josh Oglesby - Wisconsin
Texas - Vince Young - Texas
Maryland- Stefon Diggs - Maryland
Ole Miss- R Nkemdiche - Georgia (Class '13)
Nebraska- Marlon Lucky - California (Class '05)

Really interesting. Sooner or later ours will be from out of state, too. Tons of people from up north have migrated down south as they grow older and they bring with them their love for a favorite team and then pass that on to their kids. So a lot of "Georgia" kids grow up with an allegiance to other schools.

Shoot....my brothers and I were born in baton Rouge and grew up big LSU fans. As an adult I switched to Georgia , but one of my brothers is till a rabid LSU fan and his kids are too even though they were born and raised here in Georgia. It's just the new reality today.

Great find and interesting.

I don't remember it being all that different back in the 80s and 90s. There was no 247 or Rivals then . . just the Dallas Morning News and a few indie folks like Tom Lemming.

Most of the top tier talent in Texas was scooped up by out of state programs based on program momentum. Notre Dame would grab folks and then Miami and then Florida State. USC had a brief spell.

You could be right, but I would be willing to bet that if we had data to support it, we would find that most schools top recruits came from within their own states, for a variety of reasons. With the recruiting services ranking players some schools can now go personally check out a player that may not have been on their radar before. When I was in school, they largely depended on newspaper reports, and word of mouth from coaches along with all state teams etc.

Wikipedia had data on those old USA Today High School All American teams from the 90s.

It was interesting to see were the various top players went each year.

USA Today All American List

The 90 team had three kids from Texas and two went to Notre Dame.

The 91 team had three kids from Texas. Two went to Notre Dame and one to USC

I had no idea that Wiki had anything. Shoot, I didn't even remember that the internet was a thing then.

I had forgotten abpout USA Today, though. I remember they used to have some good info along with ranking the top programs in the nation.

I saw where Albert Hollis, out of Sacramento, California, was an All-American in '99. The greatest player to never played a down, except in the G-Day game, at Georgia. I still wouldn't consider him a bust because a knee injury pretty much ended his football career.

Show you how time is passing. The first big bowl game my Dad took me too was the Cotton Bowl in the early 90s when A&M narrowly lost to Notre Dame. Bobby Taylor was a Texas kid playing for Notre Dame who had a huge game that day.

His son is now a senior in high school and a highly ranked DB recruit in the Houston area.

Yep. I still vividly remember when the whole world was going to stop because the year was turning to 2000.

But...just to give you som insight to my age...I remember:
The US landing on the moon
JFK being shot
Oswald shot
Robert Kennedy being shot
Martin Luther King, Jr getting shot
Challenger explosion

Oh! And #1980

I could go on and on, so yes. I've seen a lot and remember where I was and what I was doing every time.

I'll shut up now, and apologize for derailing this thread.

So I finally had the time to look through that list. The State of Texas had 28 kids make All-American throughout the 1990s. Only 13 of them stayed in state.

Amazingly, 8 of the 15 who went out of state signed with Notre Dame. Pretty crazy. Miami, USC, and FSU were the other popular spots.
