New NCAA mandated academic reqs for 16

Let's get real. This is going to have a huge effect on next year's class.
Minimum GPA 2.3 with a new sliding SAT/ACT scale.
16 core credits, with 10 req before senior year and a specific breakdown
High school graduation
There will be a academic RS offered for those that can't quite meet them all, and I assume it counts on their eligibility clock, but don't know.
As to how this affects schools in SEC:
UGA currently reqs 17 core credits, and apparently they still req 1 more higher level math, world history, and lab credit that are not specifically laid out in the NCAA guidelines.
Auburn reqs 12
LSU reqs 13
Alabama 14
Just thought I would bring this up as it is very likely to be a big deal in recruiting. It is why Prince and Chidi-Valentine wanted to reclassify to this year.

I don't know what our requirements are but I don't care- good I'm glad they're making it tougher.

Butch already has a loophole for this.

UGA players can't read.
quote:
"They're pushing them through," said Billy Hawkins, an associate professor and athlete mentor at the University of Georgia.
"They're graduating them. UGA is graduating No. 2 in the SEC, so they're able to graduate athletes, but have they learned anything? Are they productive citizens now? That's a thing I worry about. To get a degree is one thing, to be functional with that degree is totally different."
Hawkins, who says in his 25 years he's witnessed some student-athletes fail to meet college reading standards, added: "It's too much for students reading below a college level. It's basically a farce.
https://www.cnn.com/2014/01/07/us/ncaa-athletes-reading-scores/#
quote:
According to several academic experts, the threshold for being college literate is a score of 400 on the SAT critical reading or writing test. On the ACT, that threshold is 16.
Most students only took one test, but if they took both, they had to score below the threshold on both tests to be counted.
22 members of the football team, and one member of each the men's and women's basketball teams scored below the threshold. That's 7.5%.
According to collegedata.com, the average incoming freshman at UGA scored a 1,243 on the SAT verbal and 28 on the ACT.
The average athlete playing football or basketball scored a 941 on the SAT, or 18.75 on the ACT.
UGA says it does not have any reading specialists, nor does it have a document that shows how many athletes are specially admitted to the university.
well, no shite.

UGA just averaged a 3.0 GPA across all of athletics for the second year in a row.
Piss off.

I don't think you understand the point he was making.
Every university that has major college sports pushes these guys through. You don't honestly believe all these guys are passing upper level college classes do you?

Nice of you to truncate a rather important part of Billy Hawkins quote... In his 25 years AT VARIOUS UNIVERSITIES, he has witnessed...
Makes me think you may have a bias. LOL
Hell, UGA was one of the few schools even willing to give that CNN piece all the paperwork they have. Most of the rest of the SEC just shrugged their shoulders and said, oh no we don't keep that data or can't hand it over to you or we can't find it.
At least UGA is working towards eliminating the problem by trying to make sure the players are better prepared coming into college. Now, all it needs is the high schools in the state doing their job and actually making sure these players are earning those core credits and not just sitting in class.

Yeah, and SC led the SEC in multi year APR for the Athletic Dept. Every program has some good students, who could pass and excel in tough classes/degree programs. However, a lot of the guys on all teams are NOT in tough classes or degree programs.
22 of y'all's football players couldn't read on a collegiate level to save their lives.

How so? Like the article said, they don't have a reading specialist or anything to teach these students how to read.

Nope, UGA with its increased core credit reqs is trying to make sure the players already have basic college level skills as the school has rightly decided that a flagship state university should not be spending any of its limited budget on remedial courses/program.

OK, so you're saying that b/c the school isn't going to spend money at the collegiate level on remediation/basic literacy courses or programs, does that mean you're not going to recruit those guys who would need those services? Like the 22 football players who apparently did in the past?

Yep. Which is why every year you may notice that UGA either does not offer or does not highly recruit a few big names instate.
It is also why a commit this past class was not sent a LOI when he did not make the grades he needed his senior year and ended up signing at Ohio University, a lower division school.
