Odell Haggins is the reason he's interested in FSU.

Stoops wants to bring some defensive personnel with him, maybe that's Haggins.

Yup, blzr is correct.

quote:

Stoops would like to be certain he will have the liberty to run his defense and not have anyone meddling/forcing something on him.

Stoops would also like to have some control over the defensive coaching personnel (have major input into any changes/hirings...etc.).

Doubt he's leaving his alma mater... where he's been coaching for almost 2 decades.

I know this isn't the thread for it, but I'm a bit surprised at how many AU folks believe Stoops is a done deal. He's one candidate. One. Not the candidate. If he was "the" candidate, he'd already be the DC.

Withers is off the market so that leaves Stoops, Whitt Jr, and Zook. Probably will end up being Stoops (next week), but wouldn't shock me for Whitt JR to get it either.

I think it is more of us hoping that we will be able to will it to be true. If we keep saying it enough, by god it has to work.

As for Whitt Jr. I believe he told the coaches he feels he will be in line for a NFL DC job pretty soon and wants to try and make that happen for now.

Hey, I've been there. I remember driving from an appt in Montgomery in December 2006 and listening to Dan Patrick on the radio. He was interviewing Chris Mortensen and asked about Nick Saban to Bama (Patrick had an "aren't these fans stupid" kind of tone). Mort said, "If Alabama doesn't have a coach in place when Miami plays their last game then I think Nick is their guy".

I immediately started hoping that Mal would just stay the hell in his office until the Dolphins' season was finished.

Earlier today, Chizik said that he hasn't ruled out the possibilty of Auburn changing to a 3-4 defense. I don't know how serious he is being and if he's prepared to wait until we have the right personel, but I guess it could happen.

We just need to land Stoops and get this over with.

Yea, I honestly doubt he changes to the 34. I think we do end up landing Stoops and he brings his defense. He runs a good bit cover 2 anyways, along with his cover 3. They are not a vastly different scheme anyways, so I don't see why there would be a problem.

I've always heard the key to a good 3-4 D is the nose guard. Other than Blackson, do we have anyone that could actually fill that role?

I would think that Whitaker would be a better fit, with Blackson at the end. Gabe Wright on the other end. MLB is what would hurt us, IMO.
