Freshmen Transfers and Backcounting

This question came up in thinking about how Tennessee was taking two really big classes in 2014 and 2015, but it's generally applicable.
UT has maybe six or 7 guys from the 2014 class who won't be back with the program in 2015. Are those guys still counted as being 2014 recruits for purposes of backcounting 2015 recruits back to that class?
So assume a school has 25 commits in their 2014 class and five end up leaving. Does that open five spots in the 2015 class that can then be backcounted to the 2014 class (which would still be at 25 and thus within the limit)?

Can't back count those. Just frees up 85 man limit. What we've done is called blueshirting. It's a loophole that allows a walk on to get s scholarship when they arrive in the fall. This counts the scholarship forwards instead of backwards. This is a risky thing for a recruit because there's no guarantees so basically it's for guys that are fans of the school and are typically lower ranked. They have to trust the coaches. We did this last year and kept our word, and we've done it again this year. This has allowed is to sidestep the 25 man limit. The 85 limit is still in effect.

With the old rules if you signed a guy and he didn't qualify then you could use his spot the next year.
But now, once you sign a guy, his spot is taken permenantly.

Scholarships are in the process of becoming 4 year contracts so UT will have to formulate a different strategy shortly. Kudos to Butch for being ahead of the game.

Blueshirting can't be the only thing UT is doing. With two 30 man classes in a row, the 2014 class had to have backcounted back to the 2013 class, and the 2015 class will need to be forward counted towards the 2016 class.
Or something.

In 2021, we are going to owe 4 recruits to the NCAA.

2013 class (with 22 total signees) back counted 4 to 2012. This allowed the 2014 class to backcount 7 to the 2013 class (allowing them to sign 32 in 2014).
I am assuming that there will be 6 Blueshirts/Greyshirts in the 2015 class which will count forward to the 2016 class. But I don't know abou tthat.

Also, when Butch took over hadn't there been so much attrition that we didn't even have a full 85 on scholarship?

Yeah, going forward the scholarship limit will be an actual limiting factor, but I don't believe it has thus far. The 2016 class will just have to be smaller...there's no way around it.
