Do kids recruited as 'Athlete' ever really pan out?

Bama has had several of these guys over the last few years and I can't remember any of them who lived up to their star rating.

Tharold Simon is in the playoffs.

I thought Mark Barron was listed as an athlete but I may be mistaken. He was a 2 or 3 time all american and top ten pick.
Cyrus Jones was an athlete but I'm not sure how we should judge him just yet.

Adoree Jackson seemed to do decent this year.

Mark Barron was as well. Some thought he would start out at RB. Hightower is another. Looked at as a DE project at the time. You could add Mark Ingram. Some sites had him as an athlete. He was a late add to the 2008 class. Looked at as a possible safety then.

Boom Williams seems to be working out well in Lexington.

Todd Gurley was listed as an athlete on some sites. He was pretty good.

A lot of them work out, but I don't think there's any doubt that having a clear position projection coming out if high school puts a prospect in better shape than a guy who doesn't.

They pan out all the time.
Blake Sims
Cyrus Jones
Derrick Henry
Eddie Jackson
That's Alabama's starting QB, two starting CBs, and 2nd RB from this past season. But yeah, Alabama's athletes don't pan out. Give me a break.

Jalen Hurd was listed as an athlete on 247 I think.

Cody Prewitt was an athlete.

I think there is a distinction to make... guys like Hurd may have been listed as a ATH by the recruiting services, but he was recruited and signed by TN as a RB. Some guys are signed by a school as an athlete with the understanding they'll start out at one position and if that doesn't work out, they'll move somewhere else.
While Blake Sims is being used as an example of a ATH that succeeded, would he have been better off signing as a QB and playing that position for four/five years instead of being a fifth string RB?

I don't think 1 player in this list really lived up to expectations/recruiting hype.
Blake would probably have had a better career if he would have started off at another position (safety?) and stuck with it for 4 years.
Cyrus Jones...meh.
Derrick Henry...Looks like Tarzan, runs like Jane. Would probably be a better TE.
Eddie Jackson...the jaws of life won't be able to remove the image of him falling down while OSU's WR scores a TD.
