Miracle if he qualifies ... thats why most LSU fans have hardly heard of him. He had been written off by most of the pay sites as a no chance of qualifying player.

Scott Cochran got him into shape. He looked like a SEC QB when he transferred to Virginia. He has started some there.

I don't know if him qualifying would be considered miraculous, but there appear to be legitimate grade concerns.

LSU hasn't offered, but since no one really talked about this kid before today, no one has ever asked why LSU wasn't interested in him. Answers given today lean towards a combo of scheme and grades.

I notice and recognize miracles. So many miracles, the magic miracles.

Like pelicans, long neck giraffes, and magnets(how do they work?).

And FWIW, Smith and his family is from Alabama. Smith and his parents are from Muscle Shoals.

Per his coach, Smith did well in school this past year and will be taking summer classes and retaking his ACT to work towards qualifying. So, sounds like your typical case of a kid who does poorly in the classroom as a frosh and soph and then has to try to make a huge improvement his last 2 years when he realizes he has a chance to play football in college. Some are able to get it done, some aren't.

It will be nice to have some depth at Nose Tackle. If he doesn't make the grades I'm sure someone else on our board will.

Yeah, I don't think it's a coincidence that his offer came through after the school year was over.

I wish HS football coaches weren't such idiots about this kind of thing though. They can tell pretty early on what kids have big time potential. Why do they let their grades get to such a point? They're not doing the kids any favors letting it happen.

I agree, but sometimes there are other factors. The fact that his family moved from Alabama to Louisiana could indicate other things going on. Take Lacy for example. We all know he had bad grades early on. I'm sure some of it was due to him not working hard enough at it, but there was also a lot of stuff going on with his family's situation at that time.

But there are definitely instances where coaches and councilors fail to get through to younger players about the importance of schoolwork. Then again, you can lead a horse to water...

According to a tweet from Smith's high school, his name is Omega.

I can't wait for the awful puns that are sure to follow.

Now we just need to land the #1 DT prospect and we'll have the Alpha and Omega starting on the DL in a couple years
