Trying to look good amongst the Big 10 presidents and limiting scholarships and reducing them is what caused this.

Saban screwed the pooch on this one. The kid hadn't even taken a visit to another school since committing in September. Saban should have taken his pick on one of the two that announced today, and told the other that they were out of schollies.
If it played out the way it looks like, I agree 100%.
At least he still gets to go play for a good SEC program. I feel bad for him though. We didn't handle the situation the right way, and honestly it's a complete fricking cop out on Saban's part to blame it on the new scholarship restrictions.

The schollie limit was in place before Philon committed, and long before Saban accepted the two announcements today. This wasn't a new rule that just got dumped on Saban in the last couple days. He knew the rules of the game, whether he agrees with it or not.
Your argument about the schollie limits is a valid one, but just not as an excuse for what happened today.

Not really. That's the primary reason he didn't have enough. He's doing what's in his and the University's best interest in trying to get the best available players. Passing up a better player for the sake of not hurting someones feelings wouldn't be doing his job. Life's hard sometimes and hard decisions have to be made. It's not always sunshine and candy canes. Sometimes, bad things happen to good people. As I said earlier, if this kid having 5 other major colleges offering him a free education is the worst thing to happen to him, then he's in pretty good shape.
Perspective.

Yep. And I'm glad he got to choose from several instead of being forced to go to one because it was the only one offering.

Sure it is. If you're hiring an employee and you interview someone that is qualified, but the opening isn't for 3 months, then a couple of weeks before it opens, someone with better qualifications comes along for it, who're you going to hire? The person that can do a good job for you, or someone that will do an excellant job for you?

And so does the rest of the nation. Correct?

That's something that most people in today's society won't have, Alabama fans or not.

That is a completely different argument than the one you previously gave about if being the schollie limit as to why Philon got left at the altar.

The primary reason he didn't have enough was the fact that he took two late commitments when he should have just taken one.

I agree that it is in the best interests of the program to take the best players you can get. It isn't in the best interests of the program to risk burning bridges with a highschool program that puts out one or two SEC caliber players every year though.

Not sure what you're getting at. Did this happen to someone else today?

I agree we should have taken him. That said, a verbal is not binding in either direction, and with the hard cap on spots, you know a competitive a-hole like Saban is going to get the best players possible. Still, rival schools will rightly beat him up with this on the trail with some prospects down the board in future cycles. It's a bad precedent to set, especially to a kid from Vigor. I can still see his point of view on it though; always making the most out of the current ground rules.
I wonder which in state opinion columnist will feign indignation over this the loudest this week.

1. He was asked to postpone, not told to gf himself.
2. How many he should have taken is based simply on emotions and the reaction to the emotionality of the student.
As I said, hate the kid got dealt the disappointment, but he still signed a LOI to a major University today and had 4 others to choose from, including a chance to still go to Bama at a delayed time. There's a bit of an overreaction due to emotional responses in this case. I want Saban to do what's best for the University, if that means taking a LOI from someone and giving it to another then I'm good with it. Folks that are angry, should write the SEC office, it's President's and the NCAA and lobby for more scholarships, and things like this wouldn't be an issue.

Meh. Kerry Stevenson thinks very highly of Nick Saban. I don't see it straining the relationship. It's not like it was completely out of the blue.

Yeah, I agree Stevenson's quote is encouraging on that front. Just making the point that we took the out of state kid at the same position over him.

GTFO with that reasoned logic.

Pointing out that everyone knew the rule. Not just Saban. Saban did what was in the University's best interest, in his mind. I'm ok with that. The emotional turmoil everyone is wrapped up in will pass and everyone will move on past this, including the now committed Arky player. He's still got a chance to develop in a major program, receive a fine education and better himself.

I think it's a horrible situation either way. I guess with the old limits, he could have signed him today and worried about the 85 limit later. The reality is the reality though. The question is whether or not it's better to sign to a team that won't likely use you, but to get the team you want, or to have someone give you the opportunity to go somewhere else that may give you a better chance to succeed, even if it's not what you want to hear. I think Saban could have handled it better, if this is what went down, but at the end of the day, it would have hurt either way.
In the end, I don't know which is better.

About 2 weeks ago, Alabama came in & talked to him about a grey shirt. They explain it to him & everything. He said he didn't want to do it. They said OK. He had a legit signable offer from day 1. Everything was good for him to sign today. Well a few days ago, they came back & said that he had to grey shirt cause they had over signed. Now everything is crazy. Arkansas offered him a scholarship when they found out what was going on. Tenn, Florida, & Ole Miss, did the same. Clemson started recruiting him too. Philon showed up at signing day a mess. He had to leave the ceremony a couple times not knowing what he was going to do. During the ceremony he announced that he was still going to go to Bama. He ended up leaving the ceremony right after he said that. We found him out in the hall destroyed.
He was offered a grayshirt only because Collins's mom spoke out. You all should thank her from the bottom of your hearts.
And if you think I'm serious then there is no way possible for anyone to help you.
