Will they be putting it up somewhere later? I'm still in the office.

That's why we switched to 1 year scholarships. I think these comments come from people cynical about whether or not coaches have the players' best interest in mind. I resent that..."

Saban just now.

Makes sense. I can see where some kids get to campus and just get caught up in the college lifestyle to the point that football goes on the back burner. Then they end up taking up the spot of someone who really wants to be there, and the coaches have to do something pretty dishonest to get rid of them.

That doesn't change the fact that Auburn has just unveiled a new flavor of snake oil.

Bama fans, quick question on Philon because I know nothing about him since he just popped up today for us. Does he project as a DT in a 4-3? Rivals has him listed as 6'1, 282 currently. Would you say those #'s are correct?

He would have been developed into another "Josh Chapman" for Alabama. So, he's definitely an interior player in any scheme.

He also addressed greyshirting/oversigning. Don't have a quote. He kind of made a similar argument about coach's having players best interest in mind and cynics not trusting the relationship between coach and recruit; referenced having to greyshirt 'a couple' players this year because of scholarship hard caps. He did not seem very enthused about this. Don't wanna get the quote wrong though, I'm sure it will show up soon.

In a 4-3, he would have to be a DT. Should be a solid player for you guys. Best decision that kid ever made.

You continue to harp on this, but I don't see the issue with greyshirting if a kid really wants to come to Alabama and scholarships are tough to come by. We've had plenty of guys have solid to great careers after greyshirting.

John Parker Wilson. That's it. And that was way back in an era where we were celebrating a class that broke the top 25.

I wonder what the conditions are that would enable a school to pull a scholly, or if they are different than the one year renewable ones.

Someone tweeted that Saban also said that 4 year scholarships opened the door to "lawsuits galore".

There are some defensive people in the Aub thread.

It would have to. I think there are other ways to keep people in school. This seems like it will result in a lot of hurt feelings, and could end up being more damaging for the kids who aren't performing if they can't use athletics as a reason.

Drew Davis would be another. He was a two-year starter at RT, and honorable mention All-SEC as a senior. Travis McCall would be another as well. He did well as a second TE in 2007 and 2008. There are a handful of others. Now, under Saban there is no "test case" to argue this, but the talent level is so high that most of the kids greyshirting are either recovering from injury or projects. Darius Philon would have been different. He's a serious talent, but the 2012 class is likely the deepest ever at Alabama.

Saban would favor an early signing period AFTER high school football season. 16 minutes ago

Saban wouldn't comment when asked if any signees were given multi-year scholarships. 18 minutes ago

Multi-year scholarships is a cynical approach to coaches who don't have players' best interest in mind, Saban says, and he resents it. 19 minutes ago

"We have a very good relationship with the people around Landon," Saban says when asked about Collins' mother. 22 minutes ago

Only sign juco players to fill needs, Saban says. Dixon and Belue fill needs in the secondary. More experience and maturity. 22 minutes ago

"We took some opportunities away from some guys," Saban says because of new rules targeting oversigning. 24 minutes ago

How did Alabama sign 26 when the rule is 25? One of the early enrollees is a "backcounter" (counts toward 2011 scholarships), Saban explains 24 minutes ago

Landon Collins an outstanding player, fine young man, has leadership qualities, good student, Saban says. 26 minutes ago

Saban emphasizes how he cares about more than just winning games. Developing people is important. 26 minutes ago

Recruiting not an exact science, Saban reminds. 28 minutes ago

Saban likes the new OLs. Calls it a developmental position. 28 minutes ago

Saban: We filled needs. Wanted explosive RBs and WRs. Needed to reload on defense. Feel good about DLs, LBs and DBs. Great kicker.

Earlier I said Mike Davis but that was wrong. They player I was thinking of was Drew Davis. He later became the starting right tackle. William Vlachos was going to be a greyshirt when he first signed but I do not recall if he did or not.
