If I remember the story correctly, Beasley asked to not be considered so that he wouldn't take votes away from Sullivan. There was an Auburn Plainsman sports editor (Joe Cook I think) that obsessively wrote the Heisman committee members weekly after Sullivan was snubbed in 1970 Heisman vote
Wouldn't surprise me. Beasley would have been a realist if this is the story. The chances of a WR winning it are and were very small.....but a QB? they were both great players. I am surprised we don't hear more about them.

Serious question here:
Was this before the AU/UGA hate got bad?
Actually a great question. And....from what I have gathered it got bad at different times for different people. I have seen some Auburn fans insist it got bad in 2010 with Cam and Fairley.
For me it happened the game the fire hoses were turned on the fans. Don't misunderstand....the fans on the field deserved every last drop of water they got and then some. It was when the hoses were turned onto fans standing in the stands that got me.
The irony is that I could get mad at an entire University because of the actions of a very few people. (Not sure how many of the hoses were turned on the fans in the stands or how many people were operating them)
I'm not sure if there was a single event or year it happened. I suspect it was slights or perceived slights that happened over the course of many years.
Honestly? I was ticked off Auburn did not play for the National Championship in 2004. I thought they were snubbed big time and the NCAA or whoever made the decision had made a really poor decision.
quote:Like I said....the hoses turned on the fans on the field was justified and I can't blame anybody for thta. Announcements were made for them to stay off the field. It was when they turned them on to some fans in the stands that got me....and I am sure that was done by the individual people and not your grandfather.
My granddaddy was one of the two guys who made the call to turn the (brand-new, high-powered) sprinklers on against y'all's fans that stormed JHS in '86 (says in part because they were tearing up turf and trying to rip new handicapped railing out of the concrete). He always made it sound like that was the turning point but I've always been curious about how y'all feel about things.

BTW...I have had some Auburn fans argue that none were turned on the fans in the stands...here are a few pictures to disprove that:
LINK
Also, Lewis Grizzard wrote an article talking about 1 70+ year old man that was knocked down by the water while in the stands.
AGAIN....the fans on the field deserved it and should have been arrested. Not the ones in the stands.

So, yeah, wow. My granddaddy (who was head of electrical at the time) had mentioned that they did have to turn it onto specific people in the stands (like I said, the stadium crew had just installed some new handicap railing that some folks were trying to shake out of the concrete amid the rest of the craziness).
I didn't know that somehow turned into "spray down everyone." Yikes. That sucks, and was definitely out of line. I'm gonna hope that was a miscommunication or a poor decision further down the chain

quote:Yeah so all he ever says is that he was standing with the head of grounds at the time and he doesn't remember which one suggested it and which one said okay, but that's where the idea came up. Neither of them actually used 'em.

Beasley was the best we ever had but I thought Lawyer Tillman was the best receiver in the modern era. I was a freshman his last year (if memory serves) and he was phenomenal. He could catch absolutely anything. And he was money in traffic.

Auburn has had some really good college level talent that didn’t necessarily translate to the NFL...

Darius Slayton
Isn't he one of the Giants top WR's? How does he not translate well to the NFL?

Seth Williams
Not to nitpick, but he's not even in the NFL yet so we don't know if he will or not. You could be right, but we don't know for sure.
