T. Boone Pickens watched yesterday's practice. He'd spoken earlier this week at the newly dubbed Haslam Business School as well as the Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy. The Baker Center (named for Tennessee's belated US Senator who was renowned as a statesman has hosted Cheney twice when he was Veep).
IOW, UT reaching deep into our political and moneybag connections and we have them going back ages. Lot of folks don't know then-President Nixon appeared at UT when he needed to show up at a university for PR purposes (the sit-ins and protests were sweeping college campuses) and while the students here didn't welcome him at ALL at other places it would've been worse. The great irony for Nixon was UT was one of the only southern schools to protest civil rights and be active in the other protests of the 60s -- still E. TN is GOP going back to when we stood against slavery and secession and supported the Union instead.
We got power, money, and connections, yo.
