Jeremy Shelley had a very good junior season. And yes I take up for kickers, but I was one in high school.

Add another #1 at their position to the board.

(positive spin)

No need for spin of any kind. It is a reflection of our depth currently on the team, and where we stand with current targets at a few positions of need in the 2013 class.

If they felt there was a greater need elsewhere they would take teh 3rd or 4th guy on our board before giving a scholly to an LS. However, the other needs must be already met with kids high on our board.

I'm not a fan of giving an LS a scholly, but there are situations when it makes more sense than others. This happens to be one of them (in the staff's eyes).

2) it is a clear reflection of how deep the team currently is if the staff is willing to offer to a freaking LS. That would/should never happen if your team has extreme needs elsewhere.

This is the only explanation I can think of for this. Instead of giving that last scholly to some 3 star who will probably be processed later anyways, we might as well give it to a guy who we know will play and should be one of the best in the nation.

I feel like I know a lot about football, but I admit my weakness is in understanding the intricacies of special teams strategy. Can someone with more knowledge explain to me what makes the LS so important? Is it such a tough position to learn that you can't train a TE to do it?

I see the long snapper is now Bamas'. This proves where Saban is in completing the Process. He covers every point. The #1 Long Snapper, the #1-2 place kicker. SEC West is a hard place to hang your hat. LSU-Bama winner has the inside track to the NC.

Yeah, but we're at a point where we need to assume that every player is 3 and out. We have guys that were 3 stars who are 3 and out. So we need to constantly restock that depth. And long snapper is a position that is reliant upon the kickers also being good.....

But i'm not entirely convinced he's coming in on scholarship. I ranted about giving Cade Foster a scholarship a few years ago on another site and someone who directly knew Jeremy Shelley's parents told me not to worry and assured me that no special teams players would be on scholarship under Saban. I don't know what plan they have worked out, but that's what this person(who would know) told me.

No. I will say that as much as everyone loves Tinker and all that, his snaps aren't always great. They aren't awful, or over the head, but they are sometimes tough to place correctly. AJ does a pretty good job of handling and turning

I'm almost positive Cade Foster and Jay Williams at least started out on scholarship. They signed NLI's which promised them financial aid. I guess they could've turned down the financial aid, but the university had an obligation to provide it to them.

And everyones been reporting that Mazza has been offered a scholarship by Bama not an invite to walk-on.

There is a hang time for snappers. This guy is suppose to be the shite. As in NFL lock.+ your coach fell in love with him at camp.

I've heard people say that as well and I know they had scholly offers to other programs as well.....but this guy was adamant. Maybe Shelley's parents were just told that or something. Not sure. But this guy, on his end, was 100% sure of it.

Last player I disagreed on that Saban loved was Cade Foster. True story.

Accepting his commitment shows me that we are going to take a full class this year, maybe even add 1 or 2 more.
