ESPN 150 athlete Derrick Henry is still committed to Georgia ... for now. The Yulee, Fla., native visited the University of Alabama over the weekend with his head coach Bobby Ramsay and one of his assistants, and the group was given the full tour.

It was Henry’s first time in Tuscaloosa since the LSU game last fall.

“It was really nice,” Ramsay said. “We’ve been wanting to try and get him up there for a while. He went up there for the LSU game, but that was just a zoo. He got a chance to have a more low-key time, see everything and get to meet a lot of different people.

“He got to meet the strength coach. He got to spend some time with Coach [Nick] Saban, got to spend some time with Coach [Burton] Burns one-on-one. He got to meet some of the players, see the facilities, meet some of the support people who are involved with the program and really get good a good, solid understanding of how they do things there.”

Scouts and analysts still question what Henry’s role will be at the next level, but on the visit to UA, Saban made it clear that Alabama wants the 6-foot-3, 240-pound athlete as a running back. It’s been that way from the start with Crimson Tide coaching staff.

“Not to say he couldn’t be a phenomenal defensive player, but Coach Saban and the staff there, they’ve recruited him as a running back from the get go,” Ramsay said. “Coach Saban just reiterated that this weekend with him.

“With any school, that’s probably been first and foremost, what am I being recruited as?”

Alabama has two running back commitments for 2013, Tyren Jones and Altee Tenpenny, but that won’t affect Henry’s decision because he knows there’s going to be competition anywhere, and he will still have a role with the Tide if he goes there.

“One thing you notice about Alabama is that everybody has a specific role,” Ramsay said. “With Derrick, I think he’s a little different back than those other two as far as when you have a lead, he can be a kid that can close the game for you, shorten the game for you and still have the breakaway speed to get you another couple touchdowns.”

Henry returned home Sunday from Alabama and tweeted that he plans to make a statement regarding his future after talking it over with his coaches and family.

After reading that Buc I firmly believe Henry is an Auburn lock.

It sounds like his coach know what is best for him. I'm in the camp that believes henry can be a bruising back in college and a darn good one. Tall running backs are rare because they usually end up at another position, but it's not out of the question to say a tall kid can't play. Who's to say henry won't be the next eddie george, adrian peterson, or steven jackson. Hell he probably only has 1/2" on TJ Yeldon. I hope bama can land him, jones and tenpenny fit the slasher/homerun mold but henry can grind out tough yards in crunch time. Let a defense hit derrick henry for 3 quarters and then see how they feel about trying to catch tyren jones. CNS knows what he's doing

I agree with you but he is 6'4. Way taller than anyone you named besides Eddie George who is 6'3. ANother thing is look at his body build. All of his weight is at his upper body. Where most of these guys will run over as well as around you he Henry mostly runs past guys in high school. He has legs like a WR hope he can get a stronger lower body and stay at RB.

You would expect that from his size but that's not really the type of runner he is at least in high school. With his size, you would think it would take 2 or 3 tacklers to bring him down most plays and he would frequently move the pile for a couple extra yards. But in that Grayson game, he went down on first contact frequently and usually by just one tackler. Maybe that was just a bad game for him, but I think most of his success in high school comes from getting to the edge and outrunning everyone.

Why not make him a WR?

Meh, 6'4" on scouting services usually equates to a legit 6'2", especially for skill position players.

He's no trent richardson but there were some clips in his highlight where guys were just bouncing off of him. He'll trim the fat and add muscle after a few years in a college weight program and will be a load to tackle. Brandon Jacobs has made a nice career at a legit 6'4"

Because he doesnt have the desire to play WR and its not something you could just stick someone at if they havent done it before. I think he will stay at RB and be something like Fowler or play H Back and RB. Just imagine someone like him getting the ball 5-7 times a game as a Hback. Smelley lined up everywhere at that spot. I dont know why it isnt one of the premier positions that recruits want to play in. Whoever plays that position will get the ball the most after the RB.

That's a convenient "commonly known" fact that just happens to fit the current conversation.

Well is it not true?

I'll go ahead and agree with most of what you posted. What I dont agree with is how fast he'll make the switch. He seems more convinced than ever to play RB, and is really pushing the "big backs are back" movement. Maybe he'll see the light early in his career, maybe he wont. Or there's also that small possibility he'll succeed at RB. I just dont see it. I'm not denying the kids an athelete, I just think he's overrated by the recruiting services because of how much he runs over everyone in HS. It's his ranking that gets everyone, where I think he really belongs as a middle of the pack 4 star.

Saban obviously agrees with you that he's a take, and will succeed at UA, despite my efforts to call him and convince him otherwiswe. Or maybe him and Kirby just want to prove to everyone that they can pull down their pants and take a huge shite on UGA whenever they want. Who knows.

Agree entirely about the H-back. It was an effective possession receiver with the likes of Dial and Smelley but it could be a real weapon with someone like Henry or Howard.

Antonio Conner for South Panola has switched positions. The change has allowed him to make an even bigger impact on the field.

quote:

Name: Antonio Conner
School: South Panola (MS)
Position: Safety
Size: 6' 1", 200-pounds
Class: 2013
Recruitment: Ole Miss (offer), MSU (offer), and Alabama (offer) lead over FSU (offer), LSU (offer), and Georgia
Scout.com Ranking: 5-Star/#2 Safety

Scout.com live evaluation verse N' West Rankin: Last season Conner switched back and forth from offense to defense but this upcoming season look for him to focus mainly on defense. This has allowed Tony to concentrate on his defensive assignments, and he was back to being lights out at the South Panola jamboree.

The first play of the game Conner intercepted a pass and brought it back 55 yards for a score. On the next defensive series he almost took the handoff from the quarterback and slammed the running back for a 7 yard-loss. Antonio has moved from free safety to strong safety, or more like a rover linebacker, and that has allowed him to be more aggressive in the running game while also putting more heat on the quarterback. We look for the 5-Star safety to have his best year yet for the "U".

A little late but a good read on ESPN:

quote:

Junior college offensive tackle Leon Brown has never visited the University of Alabama, but that didn’t stop him from choosing the Crimson Tide on Sunday, giving Alabama 17 commitments for 2013.

“I just feel like they presented the best opportunity for me to develop all my skills while I’m down there,” Brown said. “It’s also the best chance for me to make it to the NFL and reach all my dreams.”

UA head coach Nick Saban was happy to welcome Brown aboard despite not having the chance to meet with him in person yet. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who has visited Brown at his school in Brooklyn, N.Y., was also excited about the new addition.

“They were happy I made that decision, and they were ready to get me down there so I can start working and also sit down and talk to them face-to-face because I’ve never been down on a visit yet,” Brown said.

He plans to take an official visit to Tuscaloosa sometime in the fall or after his season wraps up.

The 6-foot-6, 308-pound prospect said Alabama likes him as a potential left tackle. In high school, he wasn’t recruited very heavily, but he believes he has become more of an all-around player since playing junior college for the ASA Institute.

“Coming out of high school, I was more of a pass blocker,” Brown said. “All we did was pass the ball 50 times a game. Up here, they turned me into a run blocker, so now I can do both. I feel like that’s pretty good.”

Brown also had offers from Kansas and Ole Miss before making his commitment. He becomes the fourth offensive lineman to commit in this class, joining Bradley Bozeman, Andy Dodd and Grant Hill.

After another season in junior college, Brown plans to enroll early at Alabama where he will have two years to play.

“I just want to have the chance to get down there and get started early, so I can have a head start,” he said. “I’ll be down there during the spring time.”

In 2009, Alabama signed juco offensive tackle James Carpenter, who played two seasons with the Tide before moving on to the NFL where he was a first-round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks.

Yeah, some Bama fan started the exchange between the two. Sounds like they're just having fun talking a little smack. AJ saying he would take our #7 (Kenny Bell) matched up on their #7 TM anytime.

I know it seems that Saban really wants this kid and that the star gazers really want this kid but I really don't.

The two RB's we have committed are just flat out better RB prospects and we have the best RB class in the country. I really would hate to lose one because we're trying to get greedy with Henry.

I just don't see Henry being a stud at any position anywhere in the SEC.

Give that spot to an offensive lineman or DB.

You can look at his film and tell he is taller than 6'2. Im willing to bet that because he wants to play running back soo bad he might be the one recruit that you hear about telling these services that he is shorter than he really is. Kid looks extremely long.

I agree wholeheartedly, but tenpenny and jones are cut from the same cloth. Neither is very big, both are fast with one cut and explode to the endzone ability. If saban has shown anything it's that he prefers bigger backs that can grind out yards and move the pile. I think Henry can provide the big back role in the future and wear down defenses. He may be a one trick pony, but it's a trick that saban likes to use
