The state of Alabama appears loaded for the Class of 2014. When 247Sports debuted its Top 25 for the ’14 class, two in-state prospects were rated as 5-stars.
Below are thumbnail sketches of 11 of the top in-state prospects that make up this talented class (in alphabetical order) plus 13 more to watch. This early list is dominated by three schools -- Vigor (4), Auburn (4) and Carver (3) -- that account for 11 of the 24 prospects.
An early Top 5
Ronnie Clark -- The big, physical safety from Calera High School recently picked up the first of what should be many offers from Auburn. The Tigers are the early leader but there’s still a long way to go in his recruitment. Clark was a star on offense, defense and special teams as a sophomore.
Marlon Humphrey -- The athletic cornerback from Hoover High School was recently ranked a 5-star in the nation’s No. 8 overall prospect by 247Sports. Humphrey, who is the son of former Alabama running back Bobby Humphrey, is also a track standout and likely Tide lean. He has offers from Alabama and North Carolina.
Bo Scarbrough -- The standout running back/athlete from Northridge in Tuscaloosa, was recently ranked a 5-star and the nation’s No. 7 overall prospect by 247Sports. Auburn was one of the first schools to offer but Alabama has the early edge for the hometown star.
Racean Thomas -- The shifty running back from Oxford High School already has an impressive list of early offers from Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Florida and Clemson. He rushed for 1,536 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore.
Tre' Williams -- The rangy linebacker from St. Paul’s in Mobile has early offers from Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Florida State, USC, Kentucky and Ole Miss. He’s made numerous trips to both Auburn and Alabama and lists the in-state rivals as his top two.
All-star potential
It's a Tigers-Tide battle for Williams.
Devin Adams -- The athletic quarterback from Vigor in Mobile is receiving early interest from a number of schools including Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Florida State. He threw for over 1,000 yards as a sophomore.
DeShaun Davis -- The speedy linebacker from Vigor had an impressive 144 tackles, three sacks and one interception as a sophomore.
Rashaan Evans -- The tall, athletic linebacker from Auburn High School is receiving interest from a number of schools including Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Florida and Michigan State. He is the son of former Auburn running back Alan Evans.
Shaun Dion Hamilton -- The big, physical linebacker from Carver in Montgomery has picked up offers from Miami, Memphis and Arkansas State. The Hurricanes are the current team to beat but he’s visited Auburn twice this spring and an offer could put the Tigers in front.
Josh Morgan -- The standout from Moody High School may be the state’s top offensive lineman for the 2014 class. He’s receiving early interest from Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Ole Miss.
E.J. Moss -- The athletic quarterback from Ashville is receiving early interest from Auburn, Alabama and Mississippi State. He’s put up big numbers as a freshman and sophomore.

Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges admits he spent most of last week studying Alabama game film in preparation for the Wolverines' season opener against Alabama on Sept. 1 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Borges, a guest Wednesday morning on 97.3 The Zone, a radio station in Birmingham, Ala., told "Smashmouth" hosts Scott Griffin and Kevin Scarbinsky that first-game prep work has started in earnest.
"I was in last week and I spent five days studying Alabama tape and watching every game they played," Borges said. "I promise you that's foremost in our minds. We're a little diverted because we've got a lot of things to think about still, but that being the first game and as big a game as it is, we're going to spend a significant amount of time on that game.
"It's already begun, and actually began before last week."
Alabama's defense turned heads last season, and Borges said he expects more of the same.
The Tide were ranked first nationally in all major defensive categories, including total defense (183.62 yards per game), scoring defense (8.15 points) and rushing defense (72.15 yards) in winning the national championship.
"There are going to be some different players in there but the returning players are for real, they are legitimate," Borges told the show. "A team that gave up 183 yards total defense, that's a mind-boggling number, now. That's just not done.
"They've still got the core of that team back defensively. It's going to be a significant challenge for us, and we know and understand that, but our kids will play hard. It will be the first game, (and) we'll want to get off to a good start, as I'm sure they will too. It is the essence of college football, this game. We're really looking forward to it. Even at this early a date, our kids are already talking about it."
Borges said Alabama now is in the situation of being able to reload each season.
"We're assuming we're seeing just as good a defense as we saw a year ago," Borges said. "And if they're not as good, God I hope that's true, but I don't think that's going to be the case."

The new rookie wage scale is supposed to make contracts easier. Now that we are in the second year of the program, I expect it to be even easier than last year, especially for Trent Richardson who wants his deal done by Friday. Most of the rookies at the top of the first round get their four-year deals fully guaranteed. Last year’s third overall selection Marcell Dareus agreed to a 4-year $20.4 million deal with the Bills. The breakdown of that deal looked something like this.
Salaries Signing Bonus Cap Number
2011 $376,371 $3,335,000 $3,711,371
2012 $1,302,605 $3,335,000 $4,637,605
2013 $2,230,210 $3,335,000 $5,565,210
2014 $3,157,814 $3,335,000 $6,492,814
Total $7,067,000 $13,340,000 $20,407,000
So without too much trouble the Browns should be able to figure out how to get Trent Richardson’s deal done as long as it doesn’t get too nit-picky in terms of structure. Just assume that Richardson’s deal will be 100% guaranteed and four years long and probably with an option year for the fifth year.
The Seattle Seahawks were the first to strike in contracts with their first rounder, pick number 15, Bruce Irvin. Irvin signed for what appears to be about 1% more money than what Mike Pouncey got from the Dolphins in the same slot a year prior. With predictability like that, it seems fans can be optimistic that Trent Richardson and the rest of the 2012 draft class will get contracts done in relatively short order.
If the new rookie slotting rules achieve that and also enable the flurry of movement we say in this year’s draft, then I would say the new CBA got that part of it 100% right.

I got bored here at work and was looking around at some sites that I never bother to look at and wound up on a Rivals message board and found some dumbass USCe fan saying that UGA is being discussed/blamed to much for "avoiding" the big 3 in the West this year. He thinks Alabama should consider themselves lucky that they are avoiding the big 3 from the East (UF,UGA,USCe).
Posted on 5/10/12 at 10:25 am to Chadaristic
Obviously I don't agree with that sentiment but I was thinking the other day that if we played UGA next year like we were going to before expansion then we would likely have 4 pre-season top 10 teams on our schedule

Personally, I think that would be awesome. Alabama is good enough to beat any team in the country week in and week out. Doesn't mean we would win every game, but we would have a pretty damn good shot at it.

the 2 guys who will give us the versatility are Jesse Williams (groomed this year for NG but athletic enough to play a 4 man DT) and Adrian Hubbard (Julius Peppers/Mario Williams athletic tall body type at Jack and DE gonna be a monster this year
disagree on hubbard. he's tall, but not nearly as thick or muscular as Peppers and Williams. he's more of a Jason Taylor than a Julius Peppers. Nkemdiche is a better comparison to Peppers. But remember that Jason Taylor was Defensive Player of the Year under Saban.

TideNation recruiting writer Greg Ostendorf brings you another edition of The O-zone, a confidential look inside Alabama recruiting. Get the latest updates from the gridiron and the hardwood as it pertains to the Crimson Tide.
In this week’s update:
•QB Ferguson has a leader
•Gators, Tide battle for DE/OLB
•Louisiana LB gets Bama offer
•Decision day nears for Pollard
•And more...
Tide on top
When Phillip Sims opted to transfer, the quarterback position became an even bigger priority for Alabama in 2013. It also opened the door for a prospect to come in and have an impact sooner rather than later for the Crimson Tide. ESPN 150 signal caller Riley Ferguson saw that opportunity, and now he wants to take advantage of it. He currently has Alabama as a front runner for his services, ahead of schools like Auburn, LSU and South Carolina. Coming off a strong performance at the Elite 11 in Atlanta last month, Ferguson had an even better showing at the Charlotte NFTC over the weekend. The North Carolina native plans to visit Tuscaloosa in June for the Tide’s camp where he hopes to impress UA head coach Nick Saban. If all goes well, he says he could pull the trigger shortly there after.
On throwing at Alabama’s camp: “It’s going to be a good opportunity. I’m going to go and definitely do my best down there, so I can impress them. They say quarterbacks can’t commit until (Saban) sees them throw, so hopefully, he sees some good things, so I can have that freedom to commit there if I know that’s the right school.”
Other QB options
Tom Hauck/ESPNHS
Marietta (Ga.) junior QB Anthony Jennings was named MVP of the Atlanta Elite 11 regional.Ferguson isn’t the only quarterback who will throw in front of Saban at Alabama’s camp in June. The UA staff remains high on Utah signal caller Cooper Bateman, who’s excited about making a return trip to Tuscaloosa and competing at the camp. Bateman, who is also considering Auburn, Florida, LSU and Washington, wants to make a decision shortly after his trip. This week, the Tide extended an offer to Georgia quarterback Anthony Jennings, and the staff hopes he will also visit for the camp. Jennings was the top performer at the Atlanta Elite 11, earning himself an invite to the national event in California. Another top passer on Alabama’s radar is UGA commit Brice Ramsey. The ESPN 150 recruit had recently talked about visiting UA, and this week he skyped with the Tide’s head coach.
UA, UF for Allen
Alabama and Florida are currently in a battle for ESPN 150 defensive end DeMarcus Walker, and it looks like it may come down to the Crimson Tide and the Gators for Ashburn, Va., defensive end/linebacker Jonathan Allen as well. Sources say Allen was close to committing to Florida after the spring game, but he made it clear that he wanted to visit Alabama before making any decision. He plans to make that trip to Tuscaloosa in late May or early June and hopes to have a decision made soon after. At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, the UA coaching staff likes Allen as a Jack linebacker, the same position Florida is recruiting him to play. Last week, he talked with both staffs, which included a skype session with Saban.
Louisiana offer
Alabama reached into Louisiana again last week when it offered Lake Charles, La., middle linebacker Melvin Jones. Although he has offers from almost every SEC school, he said the offer from the Tide left him speechless. Surprisingly, the lone SEC school who hasn’t offered yet is in-state powerhouse LSU. At this point, Jones doesn’t care way or the other if the Tigers offer, and the fact that they haven’t already has left a sour taste. Sources close to Jones say Alabama may have a slight edge because of Saban and the way he handles the program. However, his father played at Texas A&M. Jones plans to visit UA for the first time in June.
Pollard update
Time is running out for Devonta Pollard to make a decision. The late signing period officially ends next Wednesday, May 16. Sources close to Pollard say he’s still deciding between four finalists: Alabama, Georgetown, Missouri and Texas. TideNation reported last month that the decision would come down to the Crimson Tide and the Hoyas, but that has since changed since Georgetown assistant coach Robert Kirby, Pollard’s main recruiter, has joined the LSU coaching staff. Alabama remains in great shape with the ESPN 100 prospect, mainly because of his close relationship with UA head coach Anthony Grant.
Top three for Taylor
As Alabama waits for Pollard to round outs its 2012 class, the staff continues to look ahead to 2013. One of its priorities in next year’s class is keeping local big man Jimmie Taylor in state. Taylor, an ESPN Super 60 prospect, has seen his recruitment change over the past few months, and he has a new top three to show for it. In addition to Alabama, Taylor has Louisville and Vanderbilt on top, and he’s also looking at Georgia Tech. He says he’s no longer considering Georgetown and Kentucky. The 6-foot-10 junior could be close to a decision as he wants to choose a school before the summer, but he could still push it back.
On Alabama: “I’ve got a really good relationship with Coach Grant. It’s my home state, and it’s a good school. It would be a good place for me.”
On Louisville: “Rick Pitino, he’s a legendary coach. He compared me to Gorgui Dieng. He was telling me how he developed him, and he said I would be the same way if they put some weight on me.”
On Vanderbilt: “They’ve got a very good academic program, so if basketball doesn’t work out for me, I can get a degree from Vanderbilt and still make it in life. They’ve got a good basketball program, also.”
