Smelley has really been the only HB that has motioned out consistently and caused some matchup problems.
Travis McCall was a Guard sized H-Back at 6-1, 275, and it definitely showed as a blocker...and as a receiver.
Baron Huber was a former DE turned FB turned HB that again didn't offer much outside of his blocking skills.
Preston Dial had the best hands out of the bunch, but he still spent more time motioning within the tackles than flanking out. He did a lot of inline blocking at FB too.
Now Bama has a choice with what they want to do now, keep a blocking type with good hands there or putting a real athlete there who may have to work on his blocking. Although his blocking was pretty good on Dickson at A-Day.

Well you gotta admit, we sure do seem to be recruiting players that fit the mold of the playmakers for the Patriots. Two very athletic TEs in Howard and McNeil, along with excellent slot play (meaning we've recruited slot guys better than outside wideouts).

HB and TE's are always going to have to block. The only reason the Pats do what they do is because they have Tom Brady. I hope our TE's never get as soft as theirs. If Howard and McNeil don't want to block they are just big slow WR's.

It appears we are close to adopting the old, new fangled TE heavy offense currently run by the Patriots and Stanford.
Insiders expect the same out of Auburn

Can anyone read this piece on Fournette?
*Said he has 108 offers
*Thought LSU offering him in the 9th Grade was cool, but it didn't go to his head
*Considers himself a N-S runner, but played a lot of streetball when he was a kid. Not worried about catching ball outs of the backfield.
*Enjoyed Bama's A-Day and LSU's Junior Day, talks to Frank Wilson a lot.
*Wide open, feels no pressure to stay in state.
*Will decide after his Senior year.

Howard clocked a 4.51 electronic timed 40. That's hardly slow my friend.

What you did there, I see it.

The offense was the same X's and O's wise but was better before Brady got so full of himself. When Weis was there the offense was a lot more balanced and it wasn't Brady and friends. Now every set piece of the offense is built to compliment him. That isn't good consistently good football to me, But the OC's since Weis left have been basic figureheads because Brady is the offensive head coach and the OC.

I never said they didn't, but there is a difference between a lumber some blocker at the position and a playmaker who can block. More times than not, Bama has went with blocking over receiving at a position created in part for mismatches. If you're gonna use it as a fullback, just call it what it is.
Bama is recruiting better athletes for the position, the pair this year and being hot and heavy about Kevin Crosby in next year's class shows that. It's not that they are bad blockers, it's that they are better playmakers.
And I'm not sure I'd call Gronkowski soft in his blocking, I have to watch him twice a year. He's a 6th Tackle that can still go out and beat DBs and LBs. Hernandez is a flex player, to use him as a pure blocker when you have Gronkowski on the same team would be silly. He has however held his own late last year when they were experimenting with him as a RB in pass pro. You probably won't see it much this year, as they signed Addai for that role(Kevin Faulk's old role) as Brady's pass protector.

That is as fast as AJ Green's combine time and has to be 2 tenths faster than an electronic time for auburn's TE recruit, Earnest Robinson.

He meant after the season, before signing day.

That is the problem every piece of that offense is built only to compliment Brady. They basically have abandoned their run game the past few seasons. For all of Weis's faults ever he knew Brady throwing it every down and an offense built entirely around one player aren't going to cut it.

I'm surprised Howard and McNeil checked in at exactly the same size height wise. I knew OJ around that from a prior camp, but I thought McNeil was gonna be more around 6-3(despite being listed at 6-4/6-5).
They raved about Howard's physique though at 225, so he might not have to add on that much if any to be a functional collegiate player. Changes up my opinion of him ending up at 6-6, 260. Placing Howard outside could help McNeil in his quest of being a "motion TE" IF he ends up at Bama.
He's playing me real well with his statements right now...

I've never understood why so many guys don't want to/like to block. Any TE griping about the amount of balls he catches doesn't have the mental toughness to play TE. They need to be getting off on blowing someone up at the point of attack just as well as getting off on a big catch. That is a great TE>
