It seems more plausible that he’s telling the truth and Kelly made a mistake than a recruit lying.

Ya, its definitely more plausible that a guy that put all these tight ends doesnt know a tight end just by looking at them.
Or is it more plausible that someone on an anonymous sports forum made something up or repeated a rumor that wast true?

Sure, because coaches are perfect and never make mistakes. Between the two, I'll believe the kid but your 3rd possibility of an internet rumor makes the most sense.

I envisioned it as someone telling Kelly the CB and TE were in a room and he needed to go have them scheduled meet and greet with them and he just rolled with it because his attention to what’s going on wasn’t nearly high enough in the moment

I dont think the kid slandered anyone, I dont think any of that ever happened.
