Derek Mason, who was reportedly linked to the defensive coordinator opening at Oklahoma State, is set to leave his position at Auburn.

Mason will move on from Auburn, and linebackers coach/assistant head coach Jeff Schmedding is expected to be promoted to defensive coordinator, Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports reported.

Auburn last season ranked fourth in the SEC in fewest yards per play allowed, and Mason seemed to have the Auburn defense in a good position entering the 2022 season. Mason’s departure followed coach Bryan Harsin firing offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, and the Tigers replaced Bobo with former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Austin Davis.

Schmedding stepped in for Harsin as the “in-person” head coach about 5 months ago when Harsin tested positive for COVID-19.

Schmedding came with Harsin from Boise State, as he spent the previous 2 seasons on Harsin’s staff at Boise State as the defensive coordinator (play caller) for the Broncos.

I didn't watch a ton of Auburn football this year, but when I did I wasn't really noticing great scheming on defense or anything.

Not that it was bad, I just think Auburn had some players on defense and that unit was probably going to be good regardless of what you called.

I think this does point to a broader problem within the program and with Harsin though. His bump class being outside the top 10 in recruiting and them not really bringing in any stud recruiters with their new hires doesn't bode well. If things go south hes out after this year or in '23.

Depends on who you ask I guess. I honestly don't have a clue what's happening over there right now.

Thank god for Bruce Pearl.

There any QB's from Boise in the portal? Might as well make it official and make every coach/player from there.

Mason probably doesn’t suspect he can maintain that performance in year 2 is my reckon. Also seems to be a trend that guys who were probably not Harsin’s first choice (local, SEC connected guys) are leaving and getting replaced with his potato buds.

I'm not worried about QBs. We currently have 5. But nobody to block for them or catch passes.

Just posted this in another thread, but interestingly one of those five is an Oregon backup quarterback, Robby Ashford (a Hoover product), who just transferred to Auburn.

Wouldn't expect him to see a lot of playing time as he's more of a baseball guy, but he might be interesting to watch in a development role behind Calzada.

I think at least two of them leave anyway.

I'm ok with Calzada if he starts. We've started worse. I just worry about anybody behind that line and throwing to those receivers.

They seem pretty high on Holden Geriner.

With Calzada and Ashford coming in, I'm assuming you're counting Dematrius Davis as a possible transfer?

I still can't believe he hasn't seen any significant PT.

Yep.

Me either given what we saw in Finley. I'd transfer too if I were him.

This guy has been all over the SEC.
quote:

Bryan Harsin is expected to hire Auburn alum and longtime defensive assistant Jimmy Brumbaugh as the program's next defensive line coach, sources told 247Sports on Friday morning.

Nick Eason left the position vacant after just one year at Auburn, taking an assistant job under Dabo Swinney at Clemson, his alma mater, earlier this month.

Brumbaugh, who had 15 sacks during an All-SEC Auburn career in the late '90s, was one of the most productive defensive linemen in school history.

Brumbaugh spent last season as an analyst on Oregon's staff, before that he was the defensive line coach at Tennessee in 2020. He was let go by head coach Jeremy Pruitt midway through the year.

After serving as LSU's strength coach during its 2008 national championship season, Brumbaugh has made six FBS stops as a defensive line coach, most notably at Kentucky.
