I think that's a bit exaggerated. SEC teams have been fairly consistent during the last 25+ years and win National Championships on a regular basis which is a pretty good measure for conference strength.
What hurts the conference is having 1 team(Alabama) dominate and win every year. It creates an unfair perception that we are Bama and the rest. UGA, LSU, Florida, Auburn A&M have all had exceptional seasons.

There's no self proclaimed bigs.
You need the modern Big 5 to unanimously invite you in. That wont happen until you win multiple conference championships, and probably a natty, at a minimum.
You are currently the best of the other 9 though.
