In years past, some teams were absolutely decimated by players declaring, graduating, transferring out, or just quitting, and coaches had to grab a few players from the portal and put all their eggs in the recruiting basket, knowing they've got a long road ahead for rebuilding.

Yeah, players in past years have been allowed to lobby the NCAA to transfer when the coaches that recruited them left and there was no "backfilling" their spots through the portal. So while I get the "two-way street" thing, most new coaches have had to deal with attrition without a means of replacing those who left.

No others transferred in that would have had to sit under the old rules that either played or were available for depth?

I left out one, Miles Frazier from FIU

Others were:

Slade Roy - long snapper
West Weeks - special teams only outside our game with Southern and New Mexico
Jay Bramblett - punter, graduated in 3 years at Notre Dame
Tre'mond Shorts - saw no game action
Jarrick Bernard - grad transfer from OSU, did play a lot at DB
Kolbe Fields - only saw game time against Southern and New Mexico

That's the remainder of all our transfers this past cycle not already mentioned.

We lost 17 players to the portal and another 10 the the NFL draft plus a handful of others due to normal attrition. I think our final number of scholarship players this year was around 70 after Kelly taking the job with 38-39. He scooped up about as many as was realistic, but still have a ways to get to get back to a full 85. Depth has been a big problem this season, especially on the DL, and you saw that play out at the tail end of the season with those guys getting pushed around. Hard to go through 13 games with 5-6 guys in a 4 man rotation on the line, especially losing arguably your best DL in the first quarter of the first game of the season (Maason Smith)

I think Kelly squeezed about as much out of this group this season as he could, and he outperformed what I expected him to TBH. I thought LSU would be fighting for bowl eligibility and had a ceiling of around 7-5 in the regular season and 3-4 conference wins.

Sorry for pushing the portal stuff as hard as I am. I'm not trying to minimize what he's done this year at all. I just think it should be noted that he's doing this in a different era than those other coaches in their first years. We all need to remember context.

Even in this new era, Kelly has done an admirable job. It's tough coming to a new program and having to rebuild and get the team working together so quickly to win games. His years of coaching experience have certainly helped. I don't think a first time head coach would have been as successful as he has been this season. He'll be a contender in the West for years to come.
