Accurate statement, just had the misfortune of being in 2004 with 2 other big time programs being undefeated and one of them being an all-time type team

That was UGA's problem in 2002. Many, many other years a team slipped into the title game with 1 loss, but is just happened that Miami/OSU were both undefeated.

Are we saying if 2004 was a playoff or if they were inserted into 2018?

If we are talking in 2004, they would have had to beat Oklahoma and USC in a span of 7 days. Would have been a helluva challenge.

Auburn's best opponents in 2004 per the SRS Rankings
#12 Virginia Tech
#16 Georgia
#19 LSU
#21 Tennessee (2x)

Playoff opponents
#4 Oklahoma
#1 USC

Definitely not impossible. Probably 20%?

I don't think so. I'm not gonna be stupid and say they weren't a good team or overrated, they were a damn good team. But I think if they had to play either USC/OU, then turn around the following weak and play the other one of those 2, I think it'd be too much for them to have done. Down the back stretch they played a bad bama team, a mediocre UT in the SECCG, and slipped past a 3 loss VT in their bowl game. That back to back combo of USC/OU would be a totally different animal.

Again, I don't object to the idea we wouldn't have beaten USC, but Auburn beat what, 5 teams when they were ranked top 10 that year?

It looked ugly most of the game but they scored twice in the 4th quarter. It was a 3 point game with several minutes left. At that point you can't say they had "no chance".

Compared to Auburn they weren't. They had some guys who ESPN like though. NFL talent wise nobody compared to Auburn in 2004.

And when discussing VT that year, one of the 3 losses came to AU.

One of the others? USC.

VT was no slouch, they won like 6 straight games against ranked teams prior to the AU game.

You mean the same VT team that USCheat barely beat that year, and needed a bs pass interference call to beat?

Auburn 04 was certainly an okay team but no world-beaters or anything.

Yes. Only had the #1 defense in the country that year and 4 first round draft picks with more the following year. Such scrubs

The same USC team was up 14-13 on VT with 5:32 to go in the game. Auburn was up 16-0 on VT with 7:00 to go in the game. Stupid argument.

That all time USC squad just squeaked by a mediocre UCLA team that season as well.

Auburn USC 2004 would have been a good game.

Hell, it was amazing that USCheat could only manage 23 points with how putrid Auburn's offense was that year, with the turnovers and starting deep into Auburn territory for most of the game.

P.S. Guess who was a co-OC for Auburn in 2003 LSU fans? Welcome to hell

Wait, you're faulting USC for "only" shutting Auburn out 23-0 in Jordan-Hare?

No. They really weren't that good. The benefactors of a down conference except LSU.

They played close games with LSU (#5 in the nation)and Alabama(Rivalry game)...and they pretty much blew everybody else out, or at least beat everybody else by double digits, so yes, I think it is safe to say they had a very good team.

Crap! Not trying to stick up for him or anything...
But I know people who watch 12 hours of football every week during the season that have zero posts on this board!
What does the number of posts a guy has have to do with whether or not he watched a game?

Man, USC would have kicked Auburn's arse, same as they did the year before
