Pitching wasn't there for us this year and it's clear that we REALLY miss K9. No knock on Emerling, but she's just not that good.
Yeah, it was an embarrassment of riches with K9, Nugent (Tenn) and Erickson (Fla). But neither of those two wanted to stay and play behind Kinzie for a year. Also I wish they could get Pickering out of the OF, she is defensive liability there, it was painful in the WCWS.

There's a whole different world happening in your head. It's not reality, but it seems like you're having a good time.

It says something. if she had gone to OU she would have just been another contributor on Patty Gasso's championship bandolier. If she brings Tech their first title she'll go down as an all time great in their sport

To be honest, those first 10 years were really not fielding a ton of great teams overall. Its been a slog to get support for softball at many schools. Nowadays compared to then is night and day difference in talent and support. UCLA won 6 titles in first 10 years. And 7 in first 11.
Even at OU, Patty took over in 1995 and played games at a local park. Look what Patty went through and overcame, its why she’s the goat and could have easily left. She now has a college best new softball field with her statue in front.
From Wiki:
Titles:
12 — UCLA (2019, 2010, 2004, 2003, 1999, 1992, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1985, 1984, 1982)
8 — Oklahoma (2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2017, 2016, 2013, 2000)
8 — Arizona (2007, 2006, 2001, 1997, 1996, 1994, 1993, 1991)

In 1999, the University of Oklahoma won its third Big 12 Conference championship in five years at Oklahoma, but financial difficulties nearly ended her tenure following the 1999 season. Gasso noted:
“Money was tight, and my husband, Jim, had actually gone back to California because it was hard to find a job here at the time. So here I was raising our two children and trying to coach a Division-I softball program, which was very demanding of my time and energy.””[6]
Gasso remained in Oklahoma for the 2000 season despite her husband's return to California.[6] The 2000 University of Oklahoma team compiled a record of 66–8 and defeated UCLA three to one in the Women's College World Series to win the Sooners' first softball national championship.[10] Following the national championship in 2000, the University of Oklahoma gave Gasso "a significant salary hike," and her husband was able to return to Oklahoma.[6] Over the next 12 years, Gasso built the Sooners into a national softball power, winning over 40 games every year. The 2001 team finished with a 50–9 record, and the 2007 team finished 55–8.[7]

Who is “all”? I have only seen one poster say that. I have no beef with them paying thats today’s college sports and every school that can will. She is a great player and I hope they win it all.
But please stop with the all crap.

McCombs field wasn’t even built until the late 90s. The west had a real head start with the sport.

Yeah, Glasco fricked Ragin Cajuns softball when he left. He took half of the team with him.

Yeah, I still sometimes forget that softball didn't become a varsity sport at Texas until 1997 or something. OU started in the '70s but didn't get their own field until 1998.
The far western states did get a pretty good jump on everyone, but it's been shifting fast.
Even without Texas and OU, this year is probably the best the SEC has ever been, top to bottom, by a lot. They've been getting a bunch into the tournament but most didn't get very far. This year was different.
I think they did get three into the WCWS about a decade ago just going by memory. Too lazy to research right now.

Damn, I never followed softball but they play their whole tournament in 9 days? That seems crazy to me. In baseball a team can go 0-2 and be gone but that's 3 days of being in Omaha. Softball if go on 0-2 you are gone the next day. Even if make it to the championship, only there for 7 days. Crazy.

It really is just a matter of opportunity. The US killed it at the Olympics as a new sport in 96 and 2000 and it was clear there were girls ready to play.
Posted on 6/3/25 at 2:07 am to CaliHorn
That is a shame. I'm glad it's coming back in '28.

Hopefully with a better format, because I hate the medal rounds in Olympic softball. Lose. Win. Win. Gold. Win. No game. Lose. Silver?
Posted on 6/3/25 at 5:31 am to CaliHorn
That sounds awful and reminds me of many international sporting events I only catch parts of. There's usually some points system that I assume someone understands. No clue why they medaled or didn't.
I can live with the round-robin format with the top two teams playing for gold and silver, while teams 3 and 4 play for bronze. That I at least understand.
