Will we ever see an incredible offense again?

2019 LSU
2020 Alabama
2013 FSU
2005 USC

Is this year just a blip, or a sign that these offenses are now extinct? With NIL, transfer portal, and no-wait transfers, will we ever see the accumulation of talent AND meshing of players who have been together for 3-4 years to generate teams like these?

It really blows my mind that there is only one offense in the whole of the FBS averaging over 500 yards per game this season (North Texas).

No. Players transfer in-and-out too much and offenses have been simplified.

Look at the difference between Joe Burrow in 2018 and 2019. Only the 2019 season is remembered because his 2018 was forgettable. If the transfer portal existed, then either he or half his offense would've transferred and the 2019 season never happens.

We actually haven't seen one since 2020.

The clock rules have changed it.

TOP is a much more important stat now.

You could do transfers (that's how Burrow arrived at LSU); he didn't have to sit because he was a graduate. Now you don't have to be a graduate to start immediately, so that's the big difference.

Yes, it's possible a lot of the players around him might have transferred for a better offer elsewhere. Burrow was the core of that offense but it was absolutely loaded with superstars.
