Designated research institutions in Texas are:
Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor University
Rice University
Southern Methodist University
Texas A&M University
Texas Tech University
The University of Texas at Arlington
The University of Texas at Austin
The University of Texas at Dallas
The University of Texas at El Paso
The University of Texas at San Antonio
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
University of Houston
University of North Texas
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Largest by enrollment:
Texas A&M. 76,633
UT Austin 53,082
UNT. 47,507
University of Houston. 46,676
There is very little difference between UTA, UNT, and UH. All have similar enrollment numbers and all are designated research institutions. So, why shouldn’t they be treated equally in regards to PUF?

Why? Playing devil’s advocate here:

I've personally known and worked with 3 PEs that had degrees from both Texas and aggy. All 3 identified as Longhorns.
I like how this is added to the discussion including the use of “personally” and “identify”. Nobody here gives a shite about what morons you associate with.

quote:We are already there. UT shares PUF funds throughout a larger system. Several schools in the A&M system don’t get PUF funds despite being part of the system. When you look at the number of students supported by PUF funds, it’s pretty close to even pro rata.
Aggies will never rock the boat for even footing per student because they don't want to open the PUF "Pandora's Box".. because if they do, then the less fortunate systems will suddenly have more lobbying power to be included in the pie with new structuring.
The legislature should be trying to boost other schools, given how much the state has grown, but cannibalizing the PUF isn’t the answer.

Poor aggy is a diploma mill
And why does all the money get managed at UT?
Is aggy not smart enough?

aggie campus just gets bigger and bigger. Will they be adding a barber college and charm school next??
Why don’t you ask aggie why UT manages their share of the PUF? I’d like to see what creative explanations they come up with…

The PUF existed originally for The University of Texas only, thus the original manager of the PUF was The University of Texas. Prior to the discovery of oil on the lands granted to The University of Texas, the Agricultural and Mechanical College had no interest in the PUF. After the oil royalties started coming, the College wanted to share. Since the public lands were given to The University as set forth in the Constitution of 1876, and no additional provision was made for the College, the College sued to be made a part of The University. The University and the College settled, giving The University two-thirds of the PUF and the College one-third. The PUF continued to be managed by The University. None of the money in the PUF has ever been spent. A&M and Texas only get to spend in interest and investment income from the PUF, which continues to grow.

There is an argument to be made for those funds going to support higher education beyond A&M and tu, but you haven't really made it.
It should also be noted that those funds go to the systems. That includes schools like Angelo State, UT RGV, Kingsville, etc.
Beyond "we want more money", how would a redistribution of PUF funds enhance higher education in Texas?

Just curious because I’m not going to research it but how many universities are in the Texas Tech system versus the A&M system?
I know A&M has Laredo, Corpus, San Antonio, West Texas, East Texas, Victoria, Galveston, law school in Fort Worth, Prairie View, Ag service, forestry service and I’m sure I’m leaving some out.
