In 1899, the name was again changed to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. In 1960, the school officially acquired the name it has long been called and one more in keeping with its location, size, and mission — Auburn University.

Throughout the years, the institution has had four official names:
East Alabama Male College (1856-72)
Agricultural and Mechanical College (1872-99)
Alabama Polytechnic Institute (1899-1960)
Auburn University (1960-present)

Just skimmed the posts, so and I didn't see it mentioned, but the name changed to Auburn when it reached "university" status because everyone called it Auburn anyway, at least as far back as the 1910s, probably earlier. No reason to rename it anything but Auburn University.

When I was considering colleges in the mid 1950s Auburn was on the short list. That's what it was called then - I didn't even know it was officially API until I received their catalog.

Auburn IS in GA...right?
I have always thought it was funny when bama fans referred to Auburn as "West Georgia" when Tuscaloosa is about the same distance from Mississippi. So should we call them "East Mississippi"?

So, Auburn wasn't a university until 1960?

Thank you, finally someone with a straight answer.

That'd be sweet if Auburn was in Georgia. Say, Columbus.

You listed the names Auburn has been referred to as on the first page. Why are you asking a question you know the answer to?
