Why isn't Auburn known as Alabama Tech?

Serious question. Most "Polytech" schools developed into (State name) Tech. Just curious why Auburn didn't.

Well I'll go with why my former coworker chose AU over Bama.

Auburn is a prettier name.

They used to be API but think they changed their name in the 50s

When I think "Alabama Tech" the first thought that pops into my head is a bunch of rednecks trying to build machines out of duct tape, plywood, and pvc pipe.

No...most of those schools have a very long name that the media shrink to "State" Tech.

1. East Alabama Male College
2. Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama
3. Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API)
4. Auburn
