Why is Texas so bad at special teams?

Typically teams who have the top tier HCs who are regarded as the best in CFB have very very solid special teams units.
Kirby, Ryan Day, even Alabama all have excellent special teams from FG kicker, to punting for field position, to tackling in open space on punts, being able to kick it out of the endzone for touchbacks on kickoffs, and blocking fgs and punts, the best teams always have excellent special teams.
Texas poor special teams was directly responsible for 17 points of OUs total on Saturday, it is what lost them the game ultimately. It almost cost them against Tennessee allowing a punt return TD.
So why can’t Texas have at least competent special teams units? Kirby has abused them in this phase of the ball from onside kicks to fake punts you’d think they would have tried to fix it by now.

The last 3 games OSU has lost, Indiana, Miami and Texas, OSU missed FGs.
They don't get punts blocked often, but they also don't get a lot of big gains on special teams.
I would say OSU the last few years has been average on STs. Day finally hired a ST coach this season

Do you mean Jeff Banks who coached at aggy and then was the interim head coach when you canned Sumlin in 2017?

You probably shouldn't have a coach who left his wife and kids to date a former stripper who has a pet monkey. Just a thought....
