Of course Saban "cheated" the same way every one else did, through boosters allowing him to be awash with plausible deniability.
The crime was how selective the enforcement was. Have to look no further than Leo Lewis getting 10 grand from state. Which kind of gives you the idea of what the going rates were then, I mean could you imagine offering 10 grand to a mid-tier LB now?
Then when NIL came to be, fans of smaller schools, i.e. Ole Miss, went crazy because they could finally cheat w/o repentance and drove the market through the roof, which is the cause of all the fuss you have now.
Saban is not interested in stopping cheating, but he realizes at the current pace the bank is going to break and the whole set up is going to collapse and that is what he and the NCAA are trying to rein in.
