re: Why is Saban known as such a great db coach?

I agree, got to be the toughest of all positions to teach. But having a front 7 that rushes a QB and forces him to make quick (bad) decisions every time he drops back might keep DB's from standing out with great plays and stats, that was my only point.

Smart may end up at Tennessee.

That would suck. Hell, half their staff is from Bama.

Kirby Smart coaches LBs. He's gonna be the next coach at UGA, I'd bet. As soon as the Dawgs wake-up to the fact that the "kindler, gentler" approach of Mark Richt don't win championships.
You're new here. I'll cut you some slack this time.

Thank you. But deep down inside, don't you agree?

Not even a little. Smart is a great defensive coach but I see McGarity going and getting a proven head coach at a smaller school rather than going the coordinator route.
And I'm not a huge fan of hiring a guy just because he coached under someone else. It was all the rave to hire all of Belichek's assistants and coordinators and all have pretty much been failures. Same with Saban disciples. And the heavy hitters within the AD and the big money guys aren't going to want Smart after he played us a few years back.

Good points. Dooley, Muschamp, Fisher haven't really set the world on fire. Plus Weiss and Crennel were miserable failures as head coaches. Smart moving into a small school position would probably be best for him and for his ultimate gig, if he turns out to be talented as the HMFWIC.
But what about Richt? Is this his last year, if the season goes south?

It was a lateral move and while the fans may have taken it personal, a smart AD knows it was just business.

I would like to say that if he blows this year then it would be but I just don't know. I'd hope so considering it would be a major choke job with the talent and schedule we have. 10 wins should be no problem and 11 should be expected.
I have always been a huge Charlie Strong fan and he would be on the top of my list.

I like Charlie Strong. I'd hate it if you guys went that way. Charlie Wiess would be ok though.

Having been of smaller stature his entire life, Saban became quite adept at finding innovative solutions for the condition.

I think he could really succeed here. He's done a great job at Louisville imo.

Very good safety coach. He's as good as it gets imo

The 2009 team produced one 1st round CB (Kareem Jackson) and one 2nd round CB (Javier Arenas). The 2011 team produced one 1st round CB (Dre Kirkpatrick) and one 1st round Safety (Mark Barron, who was also a starter on the 2009 team).
Those NFL Execs had to see something they liked, right?

He's a very solid DB coach, his DBs tend to look better due to his other trait that I'd say is far better. He's one of the best game planners in the business. It is easy to make a defense look good when they are well prepared for the offense they will face.

It doesn't hurt that they all are 260 and run a 4.5

As has been mentioned, Saban was a defensive back in college. He also works specifically with the defensive backs during practices. The style of defense Saban runs leaves the corners on an island constantly. The DBs are very physical and often are challenged in 1 on 1 situations. I think Nick Sabans defensive backs have been much better at Alabama than they were when Saban was at LSU. Marquis Johnson may be the best example of a what a good DB coach Saban is. I know that names means jack shite to other SEC fans, but Bama fans know what I am talking about.

Dude really? I guess you forgot the reporter when Nick was at LSU that told Nick he knew absolutely nothing about defense and bet Nick he could not teach him anything in 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the reporter knew ins and outs of basic coverages. That's what makes him great, his ability to break shite down so even dumb asses get it.
