Why is LSU recruiting down this year?

The in-state talent isn’t as good as it normally is. But they aren’t recruiting well out of state either. Just doesn’t make sense as to why Kelly isn’t doing better on the recruiting trail this year.

I believe we are still about 6-8 under the 85 roster limit with a lot of seniors leaving

Because he’s an Aggie fan who either:
A. Has just started following recruiting 2 years ago when Jimbo signed “dUh BeSteSt ClAsS eVa” and doesn’t know what the frick he’s talking about
OR
B. Is just trying to rile up the LSU fans on this random July Friday Morning for some easy entertainment.
If it’s the latter I like his style!

He'll hit top ten with regularity. Top five occasionally. He's not known as an elite recruiter.

He's at a different place right now, but he generally started strong and got what he could get early at Notre Dame. Never was a strong finisher there. We'll see. Seems to me he's more of a top ten high school guy and tries to get the roster in the top 5 through the portal.

I think your class looks good. Plus, what if this staff is excellent at evaluation? That means all the lower-rated recruits could be gems. I see no reason to doubt the staff this early in their tenure.
