Very weird situation in Knoxville.
They have hired a DC.

Because he has to keep working until TN fires him to collect his buyout and TN is trying to figure out what the frick do and so hasn't fired him yet?

Because he’s likely going to get a Co DC tag and coach LBs as a horribly overpriced position coach.

Honestly why would you fire him if you have to pay him anyway? He could at least be a defensive analyst if not a damn good position coach.

Why did they ever hire him for $900k in the first place?

Why not promote an assistant already on staff, that they're already paying, to be the interim coach?

He was an insurance policy. Originally he was going to be on Pruitts staff in case they fired Pruitt in 2021. He likely would have been the head coach going in 2022 without the scandal stuff.

Steele was working like crazy. Tried to get the HC at Auburn, and when that didn't pan out he hedged his bets and then he was positioned to take HC at UT.

he is still on payroll and is probably a staff member until they are full staffed for on field coaches. Plus he is a UT alum and may stay on payroll to advise the AD or the Prez.

It’s obvious that he was Fulmer’s security policy to be able to fire Pruitt. Fulmer just didn’t know he was getting canned too.
