Why don’t more people talk about how weird the Tom Petty/UF thing is?

He never attended UF, didn’t seem to care for sports that much, left Gainesville as soon as possible to pursue a music career in Los Angeles, and UF fans are spinning a nutty, delusional narrative that he was some Florida football superfan and have turned him into the face of their program. If you Google “Tom Petty UF”, basically every result is their fanbase trying to justify the fact that they have a bizarre obsession and forced association with him by twisting reality and writing about how he REALLY did love Florida even though everyone has said the opposite for 20+ years.
It comes across as a weird and pathetic attempt at bringing some culture to the least cultured town in the SEC East.

I’m zero percent surprised that they’re obsessed with a junkie who OD’d. It’s the Florida way.

I don't have a problem with it. Dixieland Delight has to do with being in Tennessee, yet we claim it for some reason.

Because no one cares about second tier programs like Florida, lsu, and auburn

It's definitely strange and seems really forced. I Won't Back Down is just a bad song for a football game in all honesty

Some bleeding heart who wanted to stir up some emotional high decided to do something everyone could have a feel-good fart of the week.

He's a Gainesville native. I don't have a problem with it. The weird thing is how triggered they are by our band.

No, it makes all sense to me.
Bama's band performing Tusk makes less sense IMO...and they stole it from USC... at least UF is trying to be original.

I, sir, have made it my personal mission to rub Florida's face in shite over the Tom Petty obsession over the last 4 years. I'm glad to see everyone else is just now coming around to see what a charade this is.

GB24, you know what's weird? Your "yell leader" resembled the other school's "yell leaders", but he gets a pass since he was mostly surrounded by female cheerleaders on the field. But that obnoxious yelling bs is for the birds. Anyways, win/lose last night was a beautiful night for SEC Footbal!

All this Tom Petty talk reminded me of this, so I'm sharing it.
