So does Birmingham Southern, but they are NAIA. But you can not offer scholarships and all your sports have to be in that same classification. If you play Div II or III Football, you have to offer scholarships to men an WOMAN Sports (Title IX). UAB plays Div I in all sports.

Why isn't AU funding a NAIA football program at AUM?

Because AUM plays Divs II in all other sports. You can not mix it.

So what is AUM hoops? They were NAIA. Why won't Auburn allow AUM to start a football program ?

ETA: Why no Division II team? AUM is bigger than many Division II schools?

Why won't AU allow AUM to start a Div-II program? What are they scared of?

The BOT told UAB what to do.

Neither of those things are what actually happened. UAB would have lost it's accreditation if they had.

Its not fear, its pettiness. Remember going back to 1977 when Gene Bartow was hired, Bear didn't want them to have a basketball team. "The University of Alabama system has a basketball team, its in Tuscaloosa."

Bartow and Bryant never saw eye to eye and Bartow didn't shine Bear's shoes like a lot of people thought he should have. Then Bartow and Wimp had some nasty, nasty recruiting battles with Wimp coming in at the 11th hour and winning most of them. The catalyst is Bartow supposedly said Bear was a cheater.

Over the years several very successful and normally reasonable UA BOT members did all they could do to diminish and devalue UAB athletics, and quite frankly anything UAB. This bunch fought for years about UAB having on campus dorms.

Now the ball has rolled back into Little Bear's court, who is a miserable little mean-spirited jerk. As for the "UAB President is doing this" that is not the whole story. Carol Garrison challenged this bunch and was fired. Now the Board has a lap dog who will roll over. He's just humoring these clowns.

It was reported by al.com a couple months ago that several prominent members of the BOT wanted to kill UAB's football program. The story about the president having a study done is bs to take the heat off the board

The opposite is true. There was a story on al.com several months ago about UAB cutting football due to a study commissioned by president to cut costs. All the BOT stuff was picked up and written by people with an agenda to shift blame away from the president and to the BOT.

Alabama fans need a lesson on higher education funding. I've seen some posters hint that UA should be able to use the money going to UAB football. That's not how governmental appropriations work. The University of Alabama does not "lose money" because the University of Alabama System funds UAB's football program. Universities receive funds from taxpayers via the Federal and state governments. If UAB's football program was dissolved, the allocated funds for the program would not go back into the pot for the UA System to spend, the funds simply wouldn't be allocated in the future. It would not increase the funds going into UA. If people want to make a logical argument for shutting down the program, they should talk about saving taxpayers' hard earned dollar over funding a football program that operates at an annual $17.5MM loss. ...Just so we can get that out of the way.
I tried to, but...

Because the cost of a Div II Program for a school with 5K Students (working Students), is very hard to maintain. They would have to get into a Football Conference, which would mean higher cost
for the entire Athletic Dept. AUM doesn't have that money, UAB does.

Tax payers and private donors. Not the BOT or UA. There is no way for Bama fans to spin it no matter how hard yall keep trying. None of the interference was for the better of UAB.

Show us some links.

The only thing in your post that is true, is that Bartow wrote a letter to the NCAA in the 90's saying the reason he was getting beat for recruits was because of a man who had been dead for ten years.

He later issued an apology for that bit of stupidity.

If UAB athletics had that money, they wouldn't be running a $17 million deficit annually.

Look it up for yourself. The original article made it clear that the BOT was not involved.

I know that doesn't fit your Auburn agenda, but you guys have never let truth get in the way, anyway.

You're not very bright.

It's their choice whether to spend money on it or not. UAB has apparently decided not to. It is very simple.
