Why do people get hung up on players who "start" the game?

Dan Mullen asked this question in his press conference yesterday. He was asked if it's better for the team knowing who the starting QB is going forward. here's his response:

YouTube - Linked directly to the question so you don't have to find it/watch the whole thing

basically, a starter is defined who plays the first play of the game. if emory plays the first play and anthony takes over immediately after that first play and plays the rest of the game, does it really matter?

i get that's a dumb gameplan, but think about it....

Been a thing I always wondered too. It doesn’t really matter. While QB is essentially the only player on the field that it does matter

Saban is big on downplaying this moniker for certain positions, especially since a lot of guys rotate in and out these days.

Basketball is similar, in that a 6th man could be one of the better guys on the team—he's just used off the bench in a particular way.

With how much teams rotate nowadays it is a bit of a outdated concept. Someone who starts the game for UGA like JD#99 won’t play anywhere close to as many snaps as another player who not be in on the first ply.

Mullen had no issue stressing Jones was the clear cut primary QB before snapping at the questions. Now he is doing this spinning because of the results on the field and because he is being called out on it with people stressing his bad judgment when it comes to who is the primary QB - See Franks/Trask etc.

I just hope he has enough sense to make a change early enough if needed.

I try to tell the kids I coach the same thing. Starter doesn’t necessarily mean anything anymore. I’d rather have 6-8 good solid dline men than 2 dominate and 4-6 below average. Rotation is the key now. Find a role
