The 94 and 95 teams had three future NBA players. Richardson never had that many again. That's either the answer or a symptom of the answer ...

He had Andre Igoudala committed when we fired him, for sure would have gotten Ronnie Brewer and Mike Conley Jr and most likely Greg Oden by default. We were setting ourselves up for some nice recruiting classes and then along came Heath and Pelphrey.

He deserved to get fired though. I loved Coach but he couldn’t say what he said and not get it

If Tank doesn’t leave early and Sunday doesn’t get fricked over 96-99 would’ve been great. Hood would not have had to try carry a team Derek Hood was made to play ways he couldn’t and still was pretty damn good. I feel people don’t give him credit he deserved.

He went a little nuts after a loss to Kentucky, threw out the R card and got called out on it. He just made a mistake and it cost him.

It wasn't just one thing.

The fake NCAA scandal was a pain.
The changes in hand checking rules, was another pain.
The letdown of a couple of recruits didn't help.
The souring relationship between the athletic department and the basketball coach, didn't help.

And, lets be totally honest; you win a national championship, and a tiny bit of that edge comes off; you aren't 100% as hungry as you were before.

That's the falloff, in broad strokes.

Most people forget this. This added to the bogus NCAA investigation was a rough 1-2 punch.

Recalling some big name losses, Igoudala and Al Jefferson were huge after Nolan let. Ig because he wouldn't come if no NR, and Heath had Jefferson until at the last minute jumped from HS to the NBA. Igoudala would have been major in 2002 with that returning lineup.

John Robinson? Do you mean John Thompson?

Robinson was the fat white football coach at USC.

Also, calipari came to memphis st and shut down our recruiting there.

cal cut out our games with them with a backhanded slap of wanting to play competitive teams..he could have chickened out without the insult..screw that prick.

Then when our program was down and Arkansas was developing good high school players he wanted to renew the games,in Little Rock.

Memphis was a big part of our success under Richardson.

But in the late years, due to the rule changes, his system just wasn't as successful as it was and he just didn't domino with great players and depth again.

It was fun while it lasted, but like the wishbone in football,it ran it's course, except for the small teams.

I noticed this year that even Bob Huggins isn’t full court pressing much. Gah lee, that Ark defense was suffocating. They were so good. I miss it.
